- Text transcribed from caption: C-31010 LAST RITES FOR NGO DINH CAN OF SOUTH VIETNAM SAIGON, S. Vietnam -- Ngo Dinh Can, youngest brother of South Vietnam’s late President Ngo Dinh Diem, kneels in his cell at Saigon to receive the last rites before his execution by firing squad. The former viceroy of Central Vietnam was convicted of murder, extortion and other crimes during the presidency of his brother. President Diem was overthrown in a coup d’etat last November. He and another brother, Ngo Dinh Nhu, was served as political advisor and chief minister, were killed a day after the coup. An appeal to Pope Paul VI to intercede with the Vietnamese government in sparing the life of Mr. Can had been made in Paris by Madame Ngo Dinh Nhu.
