- Central U.S. Russian Orthodox figure.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CENTRAL U.S. RUSSIAN ORTHODOX FIGURE #S-1300 METROPOLITAN THEOPHILUS of San Francisco is the central figure in the Russian Orthodox Church in the United States. The Council of Bishops in Chicago recently delayed action for two years on a proposal to place the American Church under the spiritual and legal jurisdiction of Moscow Patriarch Alexei. Said Metropolitan Theophilus: “The bishops prefer a free, democratic, independent, American Church until they are convinced that the Moscow Church is free of political domination.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (GM-SF-TFD-12-5-A-E-O-D-W)

The Vincentian priests, two of a group of four, are returning to Yukiang, remote part of Kiangsi province, 400 miles southwest of Shanghai. When the Japanese occupied the region they fled to the hills. They arrived back in this country after five months of walking, hitch-hiking, and sailing. - Title
- Solace for the weary.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: SOLACE FOR THE WEARY #3393 LOS ANGELES -- Grace Cathedral’s Wayside Shrine of St. Francis -- a tiny chapel seating only 12 persons -- is open here 24 hours a day for those seeking rest and spiritual meditation. A year ago it was a shabby little shack, but Canon Charles Shreve dreamed of making it a place of refuge for men and women of all religions and creeds. The Shrine cost $3,000, all of it contributed within a space of two weeks. John de Rosen, famous muralist, after spending an hour in the Shrine, offered to paint the meeting of St. Francis and the beggar over the altar free of charge.
