A year ago it was a shabby little shack, but Canon Charles Shreve dreamed of making it a place of refuge for men and women of all religions and creeds. The Shrine cost $3,000, all of it contributed within a space of two weeks. John de Rosen, famous muralist, after spending an hour in the Shrine, offered to paint the meeting of St. Francis and the beggar over the altar free of charge.
