- Protestant-sponsored 'demonstration Catholic Mass.'
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30996 PROTESTANT-SPONSORED ‘DEMONSTRATION CATHOLIC MASS’ CHICAGO -- An ecumenical first in the U.S. -- a Demonstration (Roman Catholic) English Mass -- will be held May 25 at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel at the University of Chicago. Twenty Protestant groups -- five seminaries and 14 churches -- are co-sponsors of the program along with the Catholic Adult Education Center of Chicago and local Catholic parishes. Denominations to be represented include Baptist, Unitarian, United Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, Presbyterian, Methodist, Luther and Protestant Episcopal groups. The experimental mass in English to be demonstrated is the work of a young Chicago composer, Dennis Fitzpatrick, shown below. According to the Catholic Adult Education Center, “because his work incorporates actual and contemplate changes by Vatican Council II, it will afford a new experience for Roman Catholic and Protestant alike.” Dr. Howard C. Schomer, president of Chicago Theological Seminary (United Church of Christ), said “many traditional Protestant misunderstandings of the intent of Roman Catholic worship may be dissolved in surprise and joy at this ecumenical event at Rockefeller Chapel.” Mr. Roger Nachtwey, a singer, will portray the role of the “priest” in the demonstration mass. Model Bernice Pink, left, and Sister Mary Jeannine, R.S.M., pose together to illustrate the fasion [sic. fashion] changes proposed for the habit of the Sisters of Mercy. The design proposed at left is the work of Catherine Scott of Chicago. A spokesman for the Sisters of Charity, while stressing that the proposed habit has not been approved, said that Miss Scott's design was "very much" in the spirit of the call for more modern garb for nuns. The order's habit has not been changed since the 18th century. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-NY-1E-64-W)

Dr. Carlson was a 1949 graduate of the college’s two-year program and served in the Congo for the Evangelical Covenant Church of America, which owns and operates the college. North Park President Karl A. Olsson, announcing the memorial, said that “students who attend classes in the Carlson Tower will be reminded of the Christian Gospel for which Paul E. Carlson lived and died and which has moved other missionaries to give themselves to the world in selfless devotion.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (NP-CI-2B-65-NBM)
