- Pope says Mass for Catholic workers.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30997 POPE SAYS MASS FOR CATHOLIC WORKERS VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI is cheered as he is carried on his portable throne in St. Peter’s Basilica where he said Mass for Catholic workers in connection with the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. In an address, later broadcasted by the Vatican Radio in many languages, the Pope stressed the Church’s “understanding of the world of labor.” He exhorted Catholic workers to become apostles of the Church’s social teachings, to be alert to un-Christian influences among their own ranks, and to fight against temptations to become lax in practicing their faith. - Pieta's safe arrival.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30877 PIETA’S SAFE ARRIVAL NEW YORK -- Pieta, the Michelangelo masterpiece depicting the dead Christ lying in the arms of Mary, arrives safely in New York after its long and, thankfully, uneventful trip from Vatican City. Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, who secured the permission of the late Pop John XXIII to bring the statue to the U.S., is shown at right after he had blessed the Pieta aboard a barge in the harbor. Pope Paul VI also approved the cardinal’s request. Bound for the World’s Fair where an estimated 15 million people will view it at the Vatican Pavilion, the masterpiece was insured for $6 million while in transit. Another statue, “The Good Shepherd,” also brought from Vatican City, was insured for $2 million. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-4C-64-W)

Looking on is Father Fabiano of the “Fatebene-fratelli” Italian order of priests who take care of the sick in Rome. Edmund, who suffers from a disorder of the pancreas, was on his way to the famed shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in France. Pope Paul, after embracing the boy, recited the Lord’s Prayer with him, and promised to pray for him. The Pope also asked Edmund to remember him in his prayers while at the Marian shrine. He gave the boy a Rosary and imparted a special blessing on him and his mother and relatives in Australia. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-5C-64-NAB)

Only other person present with the Pope and Arab monarch at the audience was Magr. William Carew, Vatican staff member who served as interpreter. Vatican sources said the audience with the King was regarded as partly in reciprocation of the hospitality he extended during the Pope’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land last January. Pope Paul presented King Hussein with a mosaic of St. Peter’s Basilica and a gold medal of his pontificate. The King wore the insignia of the Order of the Golden Spur which the Pope conferred on him during his Holy Land visit. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-5C-64-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30920 POPE RECEIVES DENMARK’S ROYAL FAMILY VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI accepts a silver bowl and cup presented to him by King Frederik and Queen Ingrid of Denmark during an official visit to the pontiff. With them is the royal couple’s daughter, Princess Benedikte (left). The historic and ecumenical visit marked the first time in more than 40 years that a monarch from predominantly Lutheran Denmark has been received by a Pope. Paul VI gave the King a copy of the code of Ambrosiaster (the name given to the author of a commentary on all the Epistles of St. Paul), medals of his pontificate, and an autographed, silver-framed photograph of himself. The pontiff told the royal visitors in English that the audience was an “historic event” which “touches us deeply.” In his remarks to the pontiff, King Frederik cited the cordial relations between Catholics and Protestants in his country. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30854 POPE VISITS PRISON, SAYS MASS ROME -- Pope Paul VI speaks to about 1,200 inmates on a visit to Regina Coeli (Queen of Heaven) prison in Rome where he celebrated a Mass for them. Some prisoners kneel near the Pope as he talks, while others look down from corridors overlooking the jail’s rotunda. The pontiff was warmly greeted and applauded by the prisoners, many of whom wept. He told them: “You want freedom, welfare, and I feel powerless to give you these things you want so much.” The inmates later joined the Pope in reciting the Our Father and the Hail Mary. Pope Paul repeatedly blessed the prisoners around him and before leaving distributed gifts to all. He was the second pontiff to visit the penal institution which includes men convicted of manslaughter, armed robbery and kidnapping. The first Pope to visit the jail was the late John XXIII in 1958. In making the flight, Paul VI became the first Pope to use a helicopter. He also is the first pontiff to travel by airplane -- a precedent he established in January when he visited the Holy Land. In Orvieto, the Pope celebrated Mass and delivered a brief homily in the town's ancient cathedral. He returned to the papal summer villa by automobile.
