- Graham Arizona crusade draws over 100,000.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30961 GARAHAM ARIZONA CRUSADE DRAWS OVER 100,000 TEMPE, Ariz. -- A total of 104,000 persons attended a crusade held by Evangelist Billy Graham in Arizona State University’s sports stadium at Tempe. Peak attendance was on a Sunday afternoon, when the evangelist likened America to the Biblical city of Sodom: “It, too, was a city of science and learning and moral depravity, and its citizens had a high standard of living.” The crowd included many Navajo Indians, including Mrs. Katharine Jackson and her daughter, Mrs. Katharine Sherman (below) of Tuba City, Ariz., and a special 500-seat section was set aside for Mexican-Americans. - California youngsters aid Phoenix church.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30841 CALIFORNIA YOUNGSTERS AID PHOENIX CHURCH PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The Primera Iglesia Methodist Mexican church at Phoenix, Ariz., got a “new look”, thanks to the energy of 30 teenagers from North Ridge, Calif. The young people answered a call from the Rev. William Howard of the North Ridge Methodist church to use their Easter vacation by taking a bus-trip to the Phoenix church, which was badly in need of paint and other repairs. The young people raised money for the journey through spaghetti dinners and other fund-raising activities and spent a week in Phoenix not only renovating the Primera Iglesia church but, according to Mr. Howard, gaining experience in Christian fellowship and understanding. The California clergyman (at far right, upper left photo) directs paint-mixing chores, with Harold Gifford (standing, left), Methodist Youth Fellowship councilor from California, and the Rev. Mardoquero B. Garcia (standing, center), pastor of the Phoenix church. The visiting workers swarm all over the church, in bottom photo, and take a break from their labor, at upper right. - Holy Saturday: baskets blessed.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30853 HOLY SATURDAY: BASKETS BLESSED PHOENIX, Ariz. -- “Blessing of the Baskets” on Holy Saturday. More than 100 Polish-American families in Phoenix, Ariz., participate in a blessing of Easter foods, a tradition centuries-old in Poland. Father Edward J. Wajda, assistant director of the Newman Center for Catholic students at Arizona State University, blessed the food at St. Agnes church. The baskets, carried by children and adults, held a variety of foods, some of them of Christian symbolism. Among them were pastry-made lambs; a relish of horseradish, vinegar and beets; decorated hard-boiled eggs. The custom was begun five years ago with the approval of Msgr. Robert J. Donohoe, pastor of St. Agnes parish. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (HFU-PHOE-4B-64-W)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30813 INDIAN BASKETS FOR CHURCH COLLECTIONS PHOENIX, Ariz. -- These bright, colorful baskets, made by Indian women at nearby reservations, are used in Sunday collections by St. Mary’s Catholic church in Phoenix. The sturdy baskets are made of ocotillo and other cactus plants in various intricate designs. Members of the parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Society also use the baskets for monthly collections outside the church to raise funds for work among the poor. Shown with the baskets is Leonard Damiani, a church usher and physical education director for St. Mary’s elementary school. The parish is run by the Franciscan Fathers who also serve Indian reservations in Arizona. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (HFU-PHO-4A-64-NAB)
