- Police and Negroes clash in Harlem.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31307 POLICE AND NEGROES CLASH IN HARLEM HARLEM, N.Y. -- Some 120 persons were injured as wild rioting broke out twice in a 24-hour period in New York’s Harlem community. Police wield nightsticks here in an attempt to disperse crowds that gathered outside a funeral home where services were being held for 15-year-old James Powell, a Negro youth who was shot by an off-duty policeman. The boy, police said, had moved toward the officer with a knife. Negro leaders claimed the shooting was unprovoked. The two nights of rioting and looting, they said, reflected Harlem Negroes’ distrust of police. City officials and civil rights leaders were to meet and discuss a long-standing request by Negroes for establishment of a board of citizens to hear complaints that claim police brutality. Shown with them is J. Peter Grace, CYO president. The citation to Mr. Hope noted that he has made annual Christmas tours of military bases overseas with an entertainment group. He was in South Vietnam at Christmas. The irrepressible comedian told the audience Cardinal Spellman had visited all the fighting fronts -- “Korea, South Vietnam…and the World’s Fair.” He added that he appreciated the friendship and goodwill of Catholics -- “I have to do a lot of flying…and they’ve got good connections.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-2B-65-NAB)

Seventy years old, he was relieved, according to the Moscow announcement, “in view of his advanced age and deterioration of his health.” But it was apparent that his retirement was enforced. The Red advocate of “co-existence” was faced by growing independence of European Communist parties and by a Cold War growing hot with the Chinese Communist regime. His replacement by Leonid Brezhnev as chief of the party and Alexei Kosygin as premier preceded by only a day the announcement that Red China had exploded its first nuclear bomb.
