- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30820 PRIEST JOINS STUDENTS IN ANTI-WALLACE PICKETING LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Msgr. Anthony P. Wagener, editor of the Times-Review, weekly of the La Crosse diocese, and Neman Club chaplain at La Crosse State College (second right), joins students picketing a hall where Gov. George Wallace of Alabama was speaking. The Southern governor, an avowed segregationist, was campaigning for the Presidential Democratic nomination in Wisconsin’s primary election. After his talk, the pickets passed out a statement which said: “Regardless of what Gov. Wallace says here tonight, the actions of persons aligning themselves with segregation are unjust, inhumane and in defiance of Christian ethics and federal law.” While in this state, Gov. Wallace also was attacked by the Catholic Herald Citizen, weekly of the Milwaukee archdiocese, which labeled him the personification of “moral evil.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PJW-LC-4A-64-NAB)

- Sister's a slugger.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31537 SISTER'S A SLUGGER OCONOMOWOC, Wis. -- Sister Mary Josanna, O.S.F., plays for keeps. With a level swing few Mets achieve, the teaching nun follows the Casey Stengel line and "hits 'em over buildings." Sister Mary Josanna, who teaches at St. Mary's School, Waukesha, Wis., was one of 300 nuns who were guests of the Augustinian Fathers at an outing at St. Monica's Seminary, Oconomowoc, Wis. Sisters of the Milwaukee archdiocese and the Madison diocese played softball, tennis, fished, took hay rides, had a picnic lunch. Star of the softball game, of course, was our nun at bat. Wisconsin fans may have to get used to nuns' baseball -- The Milwaukee Braves quite likely will move to Atlanta next year. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RJH-OC-9A-64-W)

- Migrant workers' children confirmed.
- Description
- C-31393 MIGRANT WORKERS' CHILDREN CONFIRMED STURGEON BAY, Wis. -- Auxiliary Bishop John B. Grellinger of Green Bay, Wis., administers Confirmation to children of migrant workers in St. Joseph's church, Sturgeon Bay. They were among some 500 children who made their Confirmation and received their First Holy Communion in two churches of the Green Bay diocese. The rites climaxed the diocese's 17th annual apostolate to migrant workers in the state. The children received their instructions for the Sacraments from about 200 lay volunteers, who also taught hundreds of other youths and adults. Several centers are operated by the diocese for the spiritual and material welfare of thousands of Spanish-speaking farm workers who come to Wisconsin for the Summer harvest. - Who's afraid of the big bad bees?
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31378 WHO'S AFRAID OF THE BIG BAD BEES? JEFFERSON, Wis. -- Sister M. Sylvester is in charge of some 360,000 energetic bees which produce honey for St. Coletta's School for the mentally retarded at Jefferson, Wis. The bee colonies are part of the school's farm where most of the food for its pupils is raised. Also on the farm are cattle, poultry, vegetables and other commodities. The nun learned bee keeping on a farm in Chilton, Wis., where she grew up. She has been working with bees all of her 45 years as a nun at both Jefferson and Milwaukee. When working with the bees she wears a special protective veil with a mesh front, but no gloves. "I've been stung so many times, I think I'm almost immune by now," she observes.
