- Serbian royalists oppose new Orthodox bishop.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PO-29714 SERBIAN ROYALISTS OPPOSE NEW ORTHODOX BISHOP MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Consecration ceremonies for Archimandrite Firmilijan of Pittsburgh, Pa., recently named as Midwest bishop in the Serbian Eastern Orthodox Diocese in the U.S. and Canada, were protested in Milwaukee, Wis., as about 100 Serbian Royalist pickets demonstrated outside St. Sava Cathedral. Signs they carried charged the new bishop with being a “pawn of the Yugoslavian Communists.” At one point during the picketing, minor scuffling broke out and police intervened to prevent more serious altercations. The incident was part of a continuing controversy over the division of the Diocese into three sections and the suspension of Bishop Dionisije, who has headed the entire Diocese, by the Church’s Council of Bishops in Belgrade. Bishop Dionisije refused to recognize the suspension; he said charges against him alleging canonical offense were lodged by a “handful of Communists among the American Serbs” and that the Council was under pressure from “Tito’s Communist regime in Yugoslavia.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RCW-Milw-8B-63-NBM)

- Text transcribed from caption: C-29692 A TEEN-AGE DIALOGUE OCONOMOWOC, Wis. -- A group of 125 Jewish teenagers, attending a summer camp run by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations near Oconomowoc, Wis., were guests at a Solemn High Mass celebrated at St. Jerome’s Catholic church here. Shown after the service on the church steps are some of the Jewish young people, their leaders and Father Ralph Monaghan (in vestments), pastor of St. Jerome’s. Other adults are (from left): Howard Bogot, program director at the Union Institute camp; Irving Kaplan, the camp’s director; Rabbi Joseph Buchler of the camp rabbinic faculty; and Oscar Miller, camp educational director. Most of the Jewish teenagers are from the Chicago area. They attended the Mass at the invitation of Father Monaghan who heard they were studying Christian customs. He was asked by camp leaders to speak with the teenagers prior to the Mass to explain Catholic worship, priests’ vestments and Mass vessels. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: #C-4541 NUNS RETURN TO CHINA MILWAUKEE -- Undismayed by the horror of their experiences as prisoners in a Japanese concentration camp, three veteran missionaries, sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi, check their baggage at the rail depot here before entraining for the West Coast enroute to China. Their smiles indicate an eagerness to return to their charitable labors and to renew past acquaintances in the Orient. Sister Mary Veronica (left), of Sun Prairie Wisc., has spent 12 years in China; Sister Mary Ludmilla, of Chicago, nine years; Sister Mary Charitas, of Sublette, Ill., six years. Following their release from imprisonment the sisters recuperated at their Motherhouse in St. Francis, Wisc. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (D-H-MIL-WIS-BS-9D6-0)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: #S-4773 NO EMPTY PEWS HERE! This is what every pastor hopes for -- a packed congregation. Not only is every seat occupied but both floors of this church are lined with standees. The desire of many people to attend regular worship services, as more and more of them seek spiritual guidance during the present state of world uncertainty, is indicated by a rising church attendance in many parts of the country. - Church becomes a college classroom.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CHURCH BECOMES A COLLEGE CLASSROOM #S-4664 MADISON, Wis. -- The rapid influx of college students this fall, most of them veterans taking advantage of the federal education benefits, has crowded the classroom right off the campus in many colleges throughout the country. Shown above are 1,050 University of Wisconsin undergraduates assembled in the First Congregational church here attending a twice-weekly lecture on political science. University officials, lacking facilities to handle the record-breaking number of students, arranged with the church’s deacons to use the house of worship. The professor in charge lectures from a special platform and does not use the pulpit. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (JRM-MAD-BS-10C-6-W)
