- Description

The rites were held in connection with a memorial Mass for 130 Catholic missionaries killed in the Congo since that country’s independence in 1960. In a sermon the Pope condemned the “brutal violation” of basic human rights in recent violence in African nations. Christians have a duty, he said, to “stigmatize such crimes and bring them before the conscience of the world.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-3A-65-NAB)

- New cardinal pledges obedience.
- Description

As the Pope read the pledge to the 26 new Princes of the Church present, each responded, “I promise.” The cardinal received their new scarlet birettas -- three-peaked clerical caps -- but the ritual of conferring the traditional galero, or Red Hat, was eliminated. The galeros, best known insignia of a cardinal, were delivered later to the prelates at their Rome residence. Cardinal Shehan was the only American prelate among the 27 new cardinals named by the Pope. One of them was not present at the public consistory, Angel Cardinal Herrera y Oria, Bishop of Malaga, Spain. He will receive his Red Hat from Generalissimo Franco. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32146 POLICE BLOCK ‘THE DEPUTY’ IN ROME ROME -- A demonstrator is held back by police after fighting broke out outside a deconsecrated church in Rome where a private performance of “The Deputy” was to be held. Police blocked off entrance to the former church’s basement on the grounds that no theater permit had been issued. Fighting erupted when about 100 persons began jeering police. The play was to have been presented by a private theater club, Teatro Scelta, to an invited audience. Fifteen actors and their director staged a sit-in strike in the improvised basement theater to protest the police action. Written by the German author, Rolf Hochhuth, the drama depicts Pope Pius XII as failing to denounce publicly the Nazi persecution of Jews. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-2C-65-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32155 POPE WELCOMES ORTHODOX DELEGATES VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI chats with Metropolitan Meliton of Heliopolis, one of two representatives of Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras of Istanbul received by the pontiff in a private talk. The other Eastern Orthodox leader was Metropolitan Chrysostom of Hydra, secretary of the Third Pan-Orthodox Conference held at Rhodes, Greece, last November. Metropolitan Meliton presided over the conference. Greeting the two Orthodox delegates as “dear brothers in Christ,” the Pope said their meeting was a “profoundly happy event.” The Rhodes conference authorized individual Orthodox Churches to continue exploration with the Catholic Church on means for establishing closer relations. It voted, however, to postpone any collective approach to Rome for unity talks until the end of the Vatican Council. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-2C-65-NAB)
