- Episcopal clergyman ends long civil rights fast.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31012 EPISCOPAL CLERGYMAN ENDS LONG CIVIL RIGHTS FAST CHESTER, Pa. -- The Rev. Clayton K. Hewett, 30 pounds lighter after an 18-day hunger strike in protest to racial segregation in schools at Chester, Pa., smiles at the youngest of his six children. Six-month-old Maria Theresa is held by another daughter, Darrale Jeanne, 13. Mrs. Hewett is at right. The clergyman, with one arm in a sling, ended his fast after Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton launched an effort to solve the Chester school segregation problem. He was arrested on several charges during a protest demonstration and after 10 days in jail, the last three in “complete fast” without liquids, was hospitalized. For the last eight days he continued his protest, accepting only juice and vitamins. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-5C-64-NBM)

- Hunger strike for civil rights.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30988 HUNGER STRIKE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS MEDIA, Pa. -- The Rev. Clayton K. Hewett, Episcopal clergyman of Morton, Pa., takes part in a healing service of Holy Unction from his cot in a county jail annex at Media, Pa. The clergyman went on a prolonged hunger strike to protest racial segregation in public schools after he was arrested in demonstrations at Chester, Pa. The service is conducted by another Episcopal clergyman, the Rev. John Black of Philadelphia. After nearly two weeks -- the last few days during which Mr. Hewett went into a “complete fast,” without food or liquid -- physicians ordered his transfer to a hospital in Chester. The clergyman’s wife, who said she and their six children “think he’s 100 per cent correct,” said his state of dehydration made it necessary to administer liquids intravenously in the hospital, though he was continuing to refuse solids. - Episcopalians worship in 800-year-old monastery.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31556 EPISCOPALIANS WORSHIP IN 800-YEAR-OLD MONASTERY MIAMI, Fla. -- The Rev. Harold L. Batchelor, pastor of a Protestant Episcopal mission congregation in Miami Beach, strolls through an 800-year-old former Spanish Catholic monastery and its grounds where his parishioners are holding worship services. Originally built in 1141, the Cisterician [Cistercian] monastery was purchased in 1925 by the late William Randolph Hearst and shipped to this country in 11,700 packing cases. The structure remained dismantled and crated for 27 years until 1952 when the monastery was bought from the Hearst estate by two laymen. They reassembled the 2,400 tons of limestone, creating the old monastery on a six-acre tract as a tourist attraction. Now they have agreed to let the St. John the Divine Episcopal Mission use the monastery's refectory (dining hall) for worship. It has been converted into a 90-seat chapel. Mr. Batchelor hopes eventually to purchase the entire monastery compound. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (ACT-MIA-9B-64-N AB)

The Concept-East is an off-Broadway type of theater which, located in an oldtime barroom, now offers culture instead of beer. One of the first works presented was by the Rev. Malcolm Boyd, left, Protestant Episcopal clergyman long active in youth and race relations work. With him are Woodie King, center, and Cliff Frazier, actors in the minister’s play, “The Community.” Productions are carried on in a coffeehouse atmosphere. Mr. Boyd’s play describes his feelings about race and religion. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (HW-DET-1B-64-W)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-32234 ASH WEDNESDAY ON COMMUTER TRAIN HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The benediction is pronounced as Lackawanna Train 606 pulls into Hoboken, N.J. Commuters bound for New York sat with bared heads as the Rev. Craig Biddle III, curate of St. Peter’s Episcopal church, Morristown, N.J., held a 20-minute service on Ash Wednesday. The mobile worship experience, he told the smoking-car congregation, was not an attempt “to play church or perform an experiment -- this service is basically taking the ritual of the commuter and adding it to the liturgy of the church.” Many of the commuters were enthusiastic about the service and expressed home they would be continued. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31986 BLESSING OF CHILDREN AND DOLLS MIAMI, Fla. -- Twin girls take their “tiny babies” to the altar of Holy Cross Episcopal church in Miami for the traditional annual blessing of children and dolls. Clutching their dolls, Gloria and Jeannie Rosenkranz receive a blessing from Dean Frank L. Tutus. The old rite is held in connection with the Feastday [sic] of the Holy Innocents, marked on the fourth day of the Christmas Octave (Dec. 28). It commemorates the slaying of babies by King Herod in the Holy land in an attempt to kill the Infant Jesus, Who was taken by St. Joseph to Egypt. Dean Tutus said one of the ideas behind the blessing is for girls to learn through caring for their dolls to love eventually their own babies and bring them up in the nurture of the church. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31682 CLERGYMEN SUPPORT MISSISSIPPI RIGHTS EFFORT McCOMB, Miss. -- Five Protestant Episcopal clergymen -- part of an interdenominational group of 20 ministers who spent a week working with civil rights volunteers in Mississippi -- stand in front of the bomb-blasted Society Hill Baptist church at McComb. Sixteen structures used by civil rights workers were bombed in the McComb area from June 21 to the end of September, four of them churches which were totally destroyed. The National Council of Churches race commission planned to send groups of clergymen to Mississippi to assist rights workers through the fall and winter. Shown here (left to right) are the Rev. Bruce Young of Attleboro, Mass.; the Rev. Thomas D. Allen and the Rev. Quinlan Gordon of Washington, D.C.; the Rev. Malcolm Boyd of Detroit, Mich., and the Rev. Earl A. Neil of Chicago. During their stay in McComb, Mr. Allen, Mr. Gordon, Mr. Boyd and Mr. Neil attempted to visit 24 Negroes who had been arrested for “criminal syndicalism,” a Mississippi law which forbids virtually any activity which promotes social or political change. In spite of repeated requests to county officials, they were denied permission to see the prisoners. “We had a feeling that we were completely outside the United States and were being treated as enemy aliens,” Mr. Boyd said.
