- Text transcribed from caption: C-31089 POPE RECEIVES AMERICAN JEWISH LEADERS VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI receives leaders of the American Jewish Committee, pioneer human relations agency in New York, at an historic private audience at the Vatican. Speaking in English, the pontiff told the delegation he deplored the “horrible ordeals of which the Jews have been victims in recent years.” He also expressed desire for “trusting relations and for a happy future” among Christians and Jews. Shown with the Pope are from left, Ralph Friedman, chairman of the committee’s Executive Board; Mrs. Leonard M. Sperry, a board member; Morris B. Abram, the committee’s president; Philip E.
