- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30710 PRIEST GIVEN TITLE OF PROTOPRESBYTER NEW YORK -- Pope Paul VI has conferred a rare title -- that of Protopresbyter -- upon Father Andrew Rogosh, assistant secretary of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association. He is the only Protopresbyter in the United States and one of the few in the Catholic world. Title is a distinction in the Byzantine-Russian Rite which resembles to some extent the rank of Protonotary Apostolic in the Roman Rite. It carries with it certain privileges of dress and precedence, including the right to wear the mitre [sic. miter]. The papal honor was in recognition of Father Rogosh's 20 years of service with the welfare agency. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (R-NY-3B-64-W)
