At top left, General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, who died in Washington, D.C., at 84, is shown in 1951 as he reviewed the annual parade of the Brooklyn Sunday School Union. On that day he greeted some 100,00 children of more than 300 Protestant churches. At top right, the strength of the man is displayed in a portrait taken during his years in Pacific areas. Below, General MacArthur is shown in 1955 when he received an “Award of Merit Extraordinary” from the then Protestant Episcopal Bishop Francis Eric Bloy of Los Angeles. - Text transcribed from caption: C-30844 SCHOOL NAMED FOR HEROIC MARYKNOLL BISHOP BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Honors for a Maryknoll pioneer in the Chinese mission field. The Bishop Francis X. Ford High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., is named for the heroic missionary who died in a Communist prison camp in 1952. This mural of Bishop Ford is shown to school students by Father Bernard F. Meyer, M.M., one of the first four Maryknollers to go to the mission field. In 1918 he accompanied Bishop Ford; Bishop James Edward Walsh, now imprisoned in Red China; and the late Father Thomas F. Price to China. All were priests at the time of their first mission assignment. Father Meyer is currently stationed at Maryknoll headquarters, Maryknoll, N.Y. The screaming demonstrator is held back by companions as he struggles to reach an officer who had hit him with a nightstick during rioting and looting in the Brooklyn Bedford-Stuyvesant community. Together with city authorities, the New York interreligious leadership called for individual effort to create a calm in the continuing storm. - Text transcribed from caption: C-31314 BENEDICTINE NUNS READY FOR ANY BRAZIL WEATHER NEW YORK -- These four Sisters of St. Benedict of Atchison, Kans., sailed for Brazil to establish their congregation’s first mission in South America. The two nuns at right wear the new Benedictine grey habit, designed for warmer climates. From left are: Sister Mary Mel L’Ecuyer, Madesta Thomas, Terrance Minton and Mary Sarto Magadieu. They will work in a remote poverty stricken area of Mineiros, about 300 miles from the nation’s new capital [capitol], Brasilia. Before going there they will spend four months in Petropolis, study-ing the language, customs, culture and economic and political conditions of Mineiros. She will be a speaker Christmas week at the association’s convention in Philadelphia. Chairman of the history department and dean of students at St. Joseph’s College for Women, Brooklyn, Sister Joan is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where she did her doctoral work under Pulitzer Prize winner historian Dr. Roy Nichols. A fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation Colonial Williamsburgh [sic] Archives, the nun has had a number of scholarly articles on colonial government published. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-32199 THE ASCENSION IN ABSTRACT ART BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- This abstract of the Ascension is one of a series of modern paintings by William Congdon, internationally known artists, on exhibit at St. Joseph’s College for Women, Brooklyn, N.Y., until March 26. The exhibit was arranged by Msgr. Raymond S. Leonard, chairman of the college’s Theology Department, with the cooperation of the Betty Parsons Gallery, New York. Mr. Congdon’s works hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum, all in New York, as well as in other museums in this country and Europe. The exhibition at St. Joseph’s marks the first time that his paintings have been shown on any college or university campus in the greater metropolitan area.
