- Pope Paul VI's first year.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-3111 POPE PAUL VI’S FIRST YEAR (First of a Series of Two Panels) VATICAN CITY -- On June 19,1963, Giovanni Battista Cardinal Montini, Archbishop of Milan, was elected Pope and became the first pontiff in 350 years to take the name of Paul. Top row, left to right, shows the Pope’s coat of arms; the papal tiara being placed on his head by Alfred Cardinal Ottaviani during the coronation rites in St. Peter’s Basilica on June 30; his first visit outside of Vatican City -- the first of many he was to make in following the example of his predecessor, John XXIII; and Paul VI’s historic meeting with President John F. Kennedy (July 2). During that audience he praised Mr. Kennedy for his efforts for world peace and racial equality. On learning of the President’s assassination on Nov. 22, the pontiff broadcast a special message praying for the peace of his “elect soul” and lauding his devotion to “the great causes of humanity.” Bottom row, left to right; first picture shows Pope Paul at a special audience in October with Protestant, Eastern Orthodox and Anglican observers to the Second Vatican Council. Early in his reign he announced his decision to continue the Council inaugurated by John XXIII and stressed that Christian unity was one of his major concerns. Second picture was taken in November as he led some 180 members of the American hierarchy -- including Joseph Cardinal Ritte of St. Louis, Albert Cardinal Meyer of Chicago, James Francis Cardinal McIntyre of Los Angeles, and Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York -- in prayers for the success of the Council. This occurred shortly before Pope Paul formally ratified the epochal Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy which was approved by the Council Fathers at the close of the second session. The third picture was taken in January as the Pope left Rome for his momentous pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He became the first pontiff to ever to travel by air and the first since St. Peter to set foot on soil hallowed by the footsteps of Christ. - Former chaplain in Moscow dead at 62.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31308 FORMER CHAPLAIN IN MOSCOW DEAD AT 62 WORCESTER, Mass. -- Father Leopold Braun, A.A., who spent 12 years as chaplain to American Roman Catholics in Moscow, died in St. Vincent’s Hospital, Worcester, Mass., at the age of 62. The Assumptionist was the first American priest to go to Moscow under the 1933 Roosevelt-Litvincoff Agreement, providing for U.S. recognition of Soviet Russia. Under the agreement’s religious protocol, Russia consented to let a clergyman go to Moscow to administer to the spiritual needs of employees in the American embassy. Father Braun served in Moscow from early 1934 until late 1945. After he returned to this country he lectured and wrote as an outspoken critic of the Soviet regime. He helped found the Assumptionist Research and Missionary Institute in New York and was its director until last year. Photo shows Father Braun as he testified in 1952 before a special House of Representatives subcommittee in Washington, D.C., which was investigating the massacre of some 10,000 Polish officers in the Katyn Forest in Russia. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31209 THE CUSHING STORY: MISSIONS, ECUMENISM (Second of a Series of 2 Photo Layouts) BOSTON -- Foreign missions and ecumenism distinguish the 25-year episcopate of Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston. The “man of many hats” marked the 25th anniversary of his consecration on June 29. At top left, his mission zeal is epitomized by yet another hat, a “lluchu” given to him by Indians in Bolivia. Cardinal Cushing has been honored by two Popes for his foundation and maintenance of the Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle for Latin America. One hundred U.S. priests now serve areas long hit by a shortage of clergy, and the prelate, famed as a fund-raiser, supports their work at a cost of $1 million annually. At upper right, he is shown as he was embraced in 1947 by Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, supreme leader of Eastern Orthodoxy -- the patriarch was then Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in North and South America. Cardinal Cushing’s relations with the Orthodox and Protestants have spurred the ecumenical movement in the U.S.; in recent years he has preached or lectured before many non-Catholic groups. Below, left, he is shown with his old friend, Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, as they participated in an unprecedented Catholic-Protestant Colloquium at Harvard. With them are Dr. Nathan Pusey, Harvard’s president, and Dr. Samuel H. Miller, Dean of Harvard Divinity School and chairman of the Massachusetts Council of Churches’ Committee on Christian Unity. - Monastic conference in Africa.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31164 MONASTIC CONFERENCE IN AFRICA BOUAKE, Ivory Coast -- Bearded French-born Bishop Andre Duirat of Bouake (top picture, left) is shown presiding at an unprecedented six-day conference on monasticism in Africa attended by the superiors -- 24 priests and eleven nuns -- of most monastic communities on the continent. Beside him is Father Fermin, superior of the Trappist monastery at Morombe, Malagasy. Bottom picture shows some of the conferees representing the Cistercians, the Benedictine Order and the Fraternity of the Virgin of the Poor, a congregation founded in France ten years ago. Discussed at the meeting were such problems as the recruiting and training of candidates for the monastic life, and ways and means of supporting monastic foundations in mission countries. Featured at the conference were daily concelebrations of the Mass with all the priests sharing in offering the Sacrifice. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RNS-6C-64-TFD)

An excerpt from his prayer: “Hold us, we pray, and the people of America, calm and steady and full of faith for the Republic in this tragic hour of our history. God save the state and empower her for whatever awaits for the great world role she has been called to fill in this time of destiny.” Dr. Harris, who said the President’s death marked a “great and tragic loss to the nation,” has been Senate chaplain for 15 years. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-30267 KEY MOMENTS HAD PROTESTANT SETTINGS Key moments in the political life of the late President Kennedy came amid Protestant settings. Above, the man destined to become the nation’s first Roman Catholic chief executive speaks in October, 1960, before the Ministers Association of Greater Houston. Addressing 500 clergymen he delineated his thoughts on separation of Church and State. Below, the photo shows what must have been a heart-warming moment for the young leader. It was provided by Dr. E. S. James of Dallas, left, clergyman-editor of the Texas Baptist Standard. Dr. James had opposed election of a Roman Catholic president in 1960. He came to the White House in February, 1963, however, to tell Mr. Kennedy that “it was a pleasure” to note that religious bias had been scrupulously avoided by the administration. The Baptist leader said the Catholic chief executive was “determined to abide by the Constitutional provision for the separation of Church and State.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (SD-11E-63-W)
