- Bible translation described in fair pavilion.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30929 BIBLE TRANSLATION DESCRIBED IN FAIR PAVILION NEW YORK -- One of the smallest, but most unusual, buildings at the New York World’s Fair is the “Pavilion of 2,000 Tribes.” Built by the Wycliffe Bible Translators to represent a native hut, the pavilion’s name represents the number of tribes as yet without a written language. In addition to an exhibit area describing translation technique and the work of the Wycliffe organization, fairgoers -- for 50-cent admission fee -- can view large murals in a display room which tell the story of Christian linguistic work among headhunters in the Peruvian jungles. - Fighting priest' in Vietnam relieved of command.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30948 'FIGHTING PRIEST' IN VIETNAM RELIEVED OF COMMAND SAIGON, So. Vietnam -- Father Augustin Nguyen Loc Hoa, a Chinese priest who has headed a corps of volunteers fighting Communist guerrillas in South Vietnam since 1959, has been relieved of his command. A major of the South Vietnamese army has been named to replace him as leader of about 1,200 men who have carved out a safe haven in the Hai Yen sector of the Communist-dominated Camau peninsula of South Vietnam. The 56-year-old priest, shown here working at an outpost of the Binh Hung village, has been a symbol of freedom to Catholics in Vietnam and elsewhere. He is a former Lt. Col. in the Chinese Nationalist Army and fled Communist China in 1951 with several hundred followers. He went first to North Vietnam, then Cambodia and finally to South Vietnam where Chinese and Vietnamese took up arms to help him fight Vietcong guerrillas. No official government explanation for the replacement has so far come from Saigon. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-4D-64-NAB)

- Description

Housed in the university is the Higher Council for Islamic Studies which is conducting a massive revival of Islamic culture in Africa and elsewhere. The Council co-sponsored a month-long first Pan-Islamic Congress at the University attended by some 100 Muslim leaders from 70 countries. It consists of 17 Egyptian and eight foreign ulemas (religious). Bottom photo shows Muslims kneeling in prayer to Allah. Muslims are followers of Muhammed (570-632), who announced himself as the prophet of Allah. Wendell Taylor (right), pastor of the Central Methodist church (Negro), in the city. Bishop James K. Mathews of Boston (left) and Bishop Charles Golden of Nashville, Tenn., were blocked by ushers at both front and side doors of the Galloway church. On the same day, seven ministers were arrested as they and two Negro youths tried to enter Capitol Street Methodist church, where several integrated groups previously have been turned away. Bishop Mathews, commenting on the incident at Galloway church, said some onlookers made remarks relating to “our probable ancestry and our likely ultimate destination.” At the same time, he said, many white members “were bold enough” to greet them. “This took real courage on their part.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (DL-J-4A-64-NBM)

- Dr. Carlton Hayes dies at 82.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31547 DR. CARLTON HAYES DIES AT 82 AFTON, N.Y. -- Dr. Carlton J.H. Hayes, internationally known historian and diplomat who was a co-founder and first Catholic co-chairman of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, died at his hometown of Afton, N.Y., at the age of 82. He served as American Ambassador to Spain during World War II and wrote of his assignment in "Wartime Mission to Spain." The noted layman, a leader in the movement to improve interreligious and integroup [intergroup] relations, played an active role in the NCCJ as co-chairman from 1928 until 1946. In a statement lauding his work, Dr. Lewis Webster Jones, president of the NCCJ, cited Dr. Hayes as one of the early "giants" in the interreligious movement. For about 50 years after the turn of the century, Dr. Hayes was a well-knwon [well-known] figure on the Columbia University campus, where he was first a student -- receiving a Ph.D. in 1909 -- and later an instructor and Seth Low Professor of History, retiring from this post in 1950.
