- Pope outlines first encyclical.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31380 POPE OUTLINES FIRST ENCYCLICAL CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy -- Pope Paul VI is shown as he outlines the scope of his first encyclical in speaking to thousands of pilgrims from various parts of the world at a general audience. The pontiff disclosed that among questions discussed in his encyclical will be peace and the relationship between Christian and economic life. He said it also will deal with the "dialogue of the Church with the world of the non-Christian religions and with the choir of the Christian Churches still separated from the Catholic Church." The encyclical would not contain specific theological or doctrinal points, he said, and will be of an "exhortative" nature. It will be called Ecclesiam Suam (His Church) and be dated Aug. 6, the Feast of the Transfiguration of Christ. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-8A-64-NAB)

Landing on a site about two miles from the town, the Pope motored to the ancient Orvieto Cathedral as crowds lining the streets shouted greetings. At the cathedral the Pope celebrated a Mass and delivered a brief homily on man's need for spiritual and material welfare. The service marked the 700th anniversary of the Feastday of Corpus Christi, established throughout the worldwide Church by the Pope Urban IV in a bull dated Sept. 8, 1264. The Pope's helicopter flight was the first ever taken by a pontiff. Last January Paul VI became the first Pope to use an airplane when he visited the Holy Land. Msgr. J. Patrick Carroll-Abbing has founded 40 institutions for homeless boys throughout Italy. Pope Paul expressed his admiration for the Irish priest’s program, which began 19 years ago when he found hundreds of children left homeless and fatherless by the war. “The blessing of God is obviously upon this work,” the pontiff said. “I may visit Boys’ Town soon,” he added, referring to the institution in Rome. - They explore the mysteries of the heavens.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-4010 THEY EXPLORE THE MYSTERIES OF THE HEAVENS CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy -- In the modern observatory at the Pope’s summer residence, Brother Matthew Timmers (right), discoverer of Timmers’ Comet, discusses with the Rev. Walter J. Miller, S.J., of New York, the method by which the track of the comet was logged. Some years ago the Papal Observatory was located in Vatican City, but electrical interference hampered the workings of the delicate instruments and it was moved here. Photography of the stars is a major activity of the observatory, and there are more than 10,000 pictures on file. The Papal Observatory was established by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582.
