- Text transcribed from caption: SAMUEL ALPHONSUS CARDINAL STRITCH, ARCHBISHOP OF CHICAGO #1350 Created a Cardinal by Pope Pius XII on December 23, 1945, Archbishop Samuel A. Stritch of Chicago is chairman of the Administrative Board of the National Catholic Welfare Conference and also heads the American Bishops’ Committee on the Pope’s Peace Pointes set up in 1941. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, where he was born August 17, 1887, Cardinal Stritch completed his theological studies at the North American College in Rome and was ordained by the late Cardinal Respighi at the age of 23 years. At the age of 34, when he was named Bishop of Toledo, Cardinal Stritch became the youngest member of the American hierarchy. Nine years later, in 1930, he was named Archbishop of Milwaukee, and in 1940 succeeded the late George Cardinal Mundelein as Archbishop of Chicago. - Text transcribed from caption: JOHN JOSEPH CARDINAL GLENNON, ARCHBISHOP OF ST. LOUIS 1352 Born in Ireland on June 14, 1862, John Joseph Cardinal Glennon has been priest and bishop under five different Popes, and is regarded as one of the greatest orators the Catholic Church in the United States has ever known. Ordained in Kansas City, Mo., December 20, 1884, he was consecrated Titular Bishop of Pinars and Coadjutor Archbishop of St. Louis on April 27, 1903, and Archbishop of St. Louis on the following October 13. On December 23, 1945, he was created Cardinal by Pope Pius XII. Honored by half a dozen Presidents of the United States, Cardinal Glennon has been distinguished as a builder and administrator, and has been an active leader in the cause of Catholic education and temperance as well as an outspoken opponent of divorce, indecent literature, and other factors harmful to family life.
