- Royal Chinese testament.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: ROYAL CHINESE TESTAMENT #1786 NEW YORK -- This silver-covered New Testament is one of four presented to the Chinese Imperial Family in 1910, three of which have disappeared. The volume is now in the library of the American Bible Society here. Each testament was bound with silver covers depicting different Biblical scenes. This one represents the Ascension of Christ. Although seemingly the back cover to us, it is the front to the Chinese. The reverse cover also is silver, showing a group of Chinese lions. When the books were made, a special introduction explaining Christianity -- printed in red paper in pure gold -- was bound into the book. - Honorably retired.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: HONORABLY RETIRED #1787 NEW YORK -- Almost a tradition in itself is this old bell standing outside the rectory of St. George’s Protestant Episcopal church here. Made in England, it cost 250 pounds sterling and was presented to the church by Thomas H. Smith in 1818. For many years it hung in the old church in Beekman Street and afterward in the chapel at 14th Street. In 1905 it was removed to its present site after it was reported that it had been cracked by improper ringing. Once asked by the city Fire Department if the bell could be rung in case of fire, the vestry called attention to a by-law of the church directing the sexton “to have the bell rung at all alarms of fire.” Shown inspecting the bell is the rector of St. George’s, the Rev. Elmore M. McKee. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-MES-3C-6-O-A-E)
