- Description

The local bishop, Msgr. Liobet, received a message of congratulation from Pope Pius XII when he finally succeeded in bringing about annulment of a law forbidding Mass to be celebrated in the palace. During the 14th century, when the Pope was exiled from Rome, seven legitimate Popes governed the Church from Avignon. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (JK-NY-TFD-1-6-C-D)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29743 RESIGNS UNDER PRESSURE BRAZZAVILLE -- President Fulbert Youlou, head of the Congo Republic, resigned his office as tension mounted in his capital at Brazzaville. A suspended priest, he is shown in clerical robes in 1959 as he left a conference in Elysee Palace in Paris. Before his election, Youlou was a parish priest who was forbidden to say Mass because of his political activity. After riots in Brazzaville subsided, Sime Matsika, a labor leader, began to emerge as a strong man -- some sources said he was a dedicated leftist trained in Peking. A provisional government was being maintained by the Congolese Army, a native force commanded by Lt. Col. Rene Jean of the French Army. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-BR-8C-63-RB)

- The crown Christ wore.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: THE CROWN CHRIST WORE #c-3058 PARIS -- An old custom at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is the showing publicly on all Sundays in Lent of the reputed true Crown of Thorns worn by Christ, a priceless relic which came into possession of St. Louis of France over 700 years ago. Reposing in a golden case, the relic is shown here being exposed for veneration by the late Jean Cardinal Verdier, Archbishop of Paris, who died during the war. The crown consists at present of only the rush foundation, the relic having been dropped by a priest when first exposed to the people. Many of the thorns were carefully picked up and given to churches as relics. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (MP-PA-TFD-3-D-C)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: GYPSIES HONOR PATRONS #3702 SAINTES-MARIES-DE-LA-MER, France -- To this small Mediterranean seaport on the Feast of Province every year come Catholic gypsies from France, Spain and other countries to pay tribute to their patronesses, St. Sara, and her mistresses, the two Saint Marys - believed to be Mary Jacob and Mary Salome, aunts of the Virgin Mary - who, according to tradition, landed as missionaries on the shores of Gaul in 42 A.D. In this photograph gypsies are seen escorting statues of the two Marys, placed in a small boat, to the sea, where they are borne into the surf to cries of “Vivent les Saintes Maries.” On the previous day, a procession is staged in honor of St. Sara, gypsy Saint. A Pontifical High Mass will be sung by Cardinal Gerlier in Lyons Cathedral. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-3991 EXHIBITION HONORS PRIEST HERO PARIS -- More than 15,000 persons, including Emmanuel Celestin Cardinal Suhard, Archbishop of Paris, viewed an exhibition at Les Invalides here in honor of Father Charles de Foucauld (above), French desert monk. At one time a member of the Foreign Legion and a secret service agent in Africa, Father de Foucauld ranks among France’s national heroes. The exhibition in his honor was arranged by Abbe Louis of Les Invalides, who spent many years collecting souvenirs and relics of Father de Foucauld. The priest was mysteriously slain in Fort Tamanrasset on the Sahara desert during the first world war. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (POI-PARIS-MES_6D-6-C)

Pilgrims from 13 other nations also took part in the unique demonstration. Focal point of the pilgrimage was the ancient abbey in Vezelay where St. Bernard preached the Second Crusade 800 years ago. The pilgrim groups attracted large followings as they carried their crosses through towns and villages where thousands joined them in prayers for peace. American and Canadian crusaders did not reach France in time, but their crosses were borne by French volunteers. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PA-NY-TFD-7-D-6-C)

The crosses lined up outside the church were carried by pilgrims in an 18-day march on foot through towns and villages where thousands joined them in prayer, many even accompanying the crusaders all the way on their long trek over sun-baked roads. - Dissidents in Russian Orthodox Church.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: #S-4679 DISSIDENTS IN RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH PARIS -- Posed outside the Church of St. Sergius here where they convened for a four-day diocesan council are clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church who rebelled against the appointment by the Moscow Patriarch of Metropolitan Seraphim as Exarch of the western European dioceses. They have officially elected Archbishop Vladimir (seated, center, holding crozier) in his stead. The council maintained that the western dioceses belong to the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate at Istanbul and not to the Moscow Patriarchate. It further claimed that Archbishop Vladimir was named specifically in the will of the late Metropolitan Eulogius, of Paris, to succeed him as Exarch. - Exchange of ideas.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45993 EXCHANGE OF IDEAS TAIZE, France -- Near a cross on the grounds of the Taize monastic community, young people exchange ideas during the World Council of Youth. The three-day gathering saw 40,000 young people from 120 countries come together for fellowship and prayer. Rather than resolutions, plenary sessions, or committee meetings, the major events were the daily worship services -- moments of prayer, praise and testimony by youth as to how to live the Gospel in the face of exploitation, oppression, poverty, and isolation. The only thing close to a formal pronouncement to come out of the gathering was a “Letter to the People of God” issued on behalf of the young people. In it, the church was called to give up the means of power, the compromises with political and financial power, to surrender its privileges and stop amassing wealth in order to become a place of communion and friendship for the whole of humanity.
