- Pieta's safe arrival.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30877 PIETA’S SAFE ARRIVAL NEW YORK -- Pieta, the Michelangelo masterpiece depicting the dead Christ lying in the arms of Mary, arrives safely in New York after its long and, thankfully, uneventful trip from Vatican City. Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, who secured the permission of the late Pop John XXIII to bring the statue to the U.S., is shown at right after he had blessed the Pieta aboard a barge in the harbor. Pope Paul VI also approved the cardinal’s request. Bound for the World’s Fair where an estimated 15 million people will view it at the Vatican Pavilion, the masterpiece was insured for $6 million while in transit. Another statue, “The Good Shepherd,” also brought from Vatican City, was insured for $2 million. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-4C-64-W)

- Orthodox prelate calls on Pope.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CEPO-30517 ORTHODOX PRELATE CALLS ON POPE VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI autographs a collection of photographs of his Holy Land pilgrimage for presentation to an Eastern Orthodox prelate. Looking on are Metropolitan Athenagoras of Thyateira, left, who received the album, and Metropolitan Maximos of Laodicea. The visit was Metropolitan Athenagoras' second to the Vatican; he had conferred with the Pope last December when details were worked out for the pontiff's historic meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, supreme leader of Eastern Orthodoxy. The Orthodoxy envoy told Pope Paul that he had been asked by the Patriarch to express his "joy and gratitude for the meeting in Jerusalem."
