- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30997 POPE SAYS MASS FOR CATHOLIC WORKERS VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI is cheered as he is carried on his portable throne in St. Peter’s Basilica where he said Mass for Catholic workers in connection with the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. In an address, later broadcasted by the Vatican Radio in many languages, the Pope stressed the Church’s “understanding of the world of labor.” He exhorted Catholic workers to become apostles of the Church’s social teachings, to be alert to un-Christian influences among their own ranks, and to fight against temptations to become lax in practicing their faith. - Pieta's safe arrival.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30877 PIETA’S SAFE ARRIVAL NEW YORK -- Pieta, the Michelangelo masterpiece depicting the dead Christ lying in the arms of Mary, arrives safely in New York after its long and, thankfully, uneventful trip from Vatican City. Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, who secured the permission of the late Pop John XXIII to bring the statue to the U.S., is shown at right after he had blessed the Pieta aboard a barge in the harbor. Pope Paul VI also approved the cardinal’s request. Bound for the World’s Fair where an estimated 15 million people will view it at the Vatican Pavilion, the masterpiece was insured for $6 million while in transit. Another statue, “The Good Shepherd,” also brought from Vatican City, was insured for $2 million. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-4C-64-W)

Looking on is Father Fabiano of the “Fatebene-fratelli” Italian order of priests who take care of the sick in Rome. Edmund, who suffers from a disorder of the pancreas, was on his way to the famed shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in France. Pope Paul, after embracing the boy, recited the Lord’s Prayer with him, and promised to pray for him. The Pope also asked Edmund to remember him in his prayers while at the Marian shrine. He gave the boy a Rosary and imparted a special blessing on him and his mother and relatives in Australia. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-5C-64-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31011 POPE RECEIVES JORDAN’S KING VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI greets King Hussein of Jordan outside the papal library where they conferred for about 20 minutes. Only other person present with the Pope and Arab monarch at the audience was Magr. William Carew, Vatican staff member who served as interpreter. Vatican sources said the audience with the King was regarded as partly in reciprocation of the hospitality he extended during the Pope’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land last January. Pope Paul presented King Hussein with a mosaic of St. Peter’s Basilica and a gold medal of his pontificate. The King wore the insignia of the Order of the Golden Spur which the Pope conferred on him during his Holy Land visit. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-5C-64-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30920 POPE RECEIVES DENMARK’S ROYAL FAMILY VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI accepts a silver bowl and cup presented to him by King Frederik and Queen Ingrid of Denmark during an official visit to the pontiff. With them is the royal couple’s daughter, Princess Benedikte (left). The historic and ecumenical visit marked the first time in more than 40 years that a monarch from predominantly Lutheran Denmark has been received by a Pope. Paul VI gave the King a copy of the code of Ambrosiaster (the name given to the author of a commentary on all the Epistles of St. Paul), medals of his pontificate, and an autographed, silver-framed photograph of himself. The pontiff told the royal visitors in English that the audience was an “historic event” which “touches us deeply.” In his remarks to the pontiff, King Frederik cited the cordial relations between Catholics and Protestants in his country. On either side of the pontiff are some of the 2, 300 Fathers of the Vatican Council who participated in the services. Flown to Greece, the relic -- skull of the Apostle -- was escorted by a delegation headed by Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity. On its arrival, the relic and its escorts received a warm welcome from Metropolitan Constantine of Patras, in whose diocesan cathedral the skull will be enshrined. After some 500 years in the St. Peter's grottoes, the relic was returned to the Orthodox by the Pope as a gesture of "brotherly love." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-9E-64-NAB)

ANDREW RELIC VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI carries a famed relic of St. Andrew in a gold reliquary during a procession in St. Peter's Basilica. The procession was followed by a Mass attended by the Fathers of the Vatican Council and celebrated by Paolo Cardinal Marella, archpriest of the basilica. The Council Fathers' veneration of the relic -- skull of Apostle -- was a prelude to its return by the Pope to the Orthodox Church in Greece as a gesture of "brotherly love." The relic -- enshrined in St. Peter's for some 500 years -- was to leave Rome by air Sept. 26, escorted by a delegation headed by Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity. It is being returned to the Orthodox Diocese of Patras, where St. Andrew was beheaded in 60 A.D. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-9D-64-NAB)

- Pope Paul VI's first year.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-3111 POPE PAUL VI’S FIRST YEAR (First of a Series of Two Panels) VATICAN CITY -- On June 19,1963, Giovanni Battista Cardinal Montini, Archbishop of Milan, was elected Pope and became the first pontiff in 350 years to take the name of Paul. Top row, left to right, shows the Pope’s coat of arms; the papal tiara being placed on his head by Alfred Cardinal Ottaviani during the coronation rites in St. Peter’s Basilica on June 30; his first visit outside of Vatican City -- the first of many he was to make in following the example of his predecessor, John XXIII; and Paul VI’s historic meeting with President John F. Kennedy (July 2). During that audience he praised Mr. Kennedy for his efforts for world peace and racial equality. On learning of the President’s assassination on Nov. 22, the pontiff broadcast a special message praying for the peace of his “elect soul” and lauding his devotion to “the great causes of humanity.” Bottom row, left to right; first picture shows Pope Paul at a special audience in October with Protestant, Eastern Orthodox and Anglican observers to the Second Vatican Council. Early in his reign he announced his decision to continue the Council inaugurated by John XXIII and stressed that Christian unity was one of his major concerns. Second picture was taken in November as he led some 180 members of the American hierarchy -- including Joseph Cardinal Ritte of St. Louis, Albert Cardinal Meyer of Chicago, James Francis Cardinal McIntyre of Los Angeles, and Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York -- in prayers for the success of the Council. This occurred shortly before Pope Paul formally ratified the epochal Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy which was approved by the Council Fathers at the close of the second session. The third picture was taken in January as the Pope left Rome for his momentous pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He became the first pontiff to ever to travel by air and the first since St. Peter to set foot on soil hallowed by the footsteps of Christ.
