- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30843 WORLD ‘VATICAN’ OF MUSLIMS CAIRO -- The Al Azhar University in Cairo, more than 1,000 years old, is the Islamic “equivalent” of the Vatican in Rome for Muslims, who make up the world’s largest organized non-Christian religion. Housed in the university is the Higher Council for Islamic Studies which is conducting a massive revival of Islamic culture in Africa and elsewhere. The Council co-sponsored a month-long first Pan-Islamic Congress at the University attended by some 100 Muslim leaders from 70 countries. It consists of 17 Egyptian and eight foreign ulemas (religious). Bottom photo shows Muslims kneeling in prayer to Allah. Muslims are followers of Muhammed (570-632), who announced himself as the prophet of Allah. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CHURCHMEN IN THE NEWS Son of Abyssinian King is Last of Desert Hermit Monks By Religious News Service CAIRO -- The son of an Abyssinian king is the last of the hermit monks in the Egyptian desert. In a dirty cave swept only by desert gales Abd el Messieh (“Slave of Christ”) has lived alone for the past nine years, seeing other human beings only when he makes his weekly visit to the Baramous Monastery in Wadi Natron, a Coptic Christian institution, for his food and water. The cave in the desert marked the end of a 3,000 mile trail over which Abd el Messieh walked after his father had been killed in battle. His father, an Abyssinian Rass, or king, died in the Battle of Aduwa in 1896, when the Ethiopians scored a decisive victory over the invading Italians.
