- Priest gets 'self-imposed' exile.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31980 PRIEST GETS 'SELF-IMPOSED' EXILE LOS ANGELES- Father John V. Coffield, pastor of Ascension church in Los Angeles, has requested--and been granted-- a "self-imposed exile" in Chicago for an indefinite period. He is shown here with Father Juan Soto (left) and a group of parishioners, most of whom are Latin Americans and Negroes. Father Coffield, in announcing the exile, claimed he had been forbidden to preach out against racial problems by James Francis Cardinal McIntyre, Archbishop of Los Anegeles. He said he preferred the exile to maintaining "silence on racism," and as a solution to "an impasse between my cardinal and myself." Father Coffield also claimed he had been given an "enforced vacation of five months" from June to November after he had spoken out against a state proposition nullifying anti-discrimination laws in housing, later approved by voters. - Pope says Mass for Catholic workers.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30997 POPE SAYS MASS FOR CATHOLIC WORKERS VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI is cheered as he is carried on his portable throne in St. Peter’s Basilica where he said Mass for Catholic workers in connection with the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. In an address, later broadcasted by the Vatican Radio in many languages, the Pope stressed the Church’s “understanding of the world of labor.” He exhorted Catholic workers to become apostles of the Church’s social teachings, to be alert to un-Christian influences among their own ranks, and to fight against temptations to become lax in practicing their faith. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30947 ALABAMA ARCHBISHOP ORDERS CATHOLIC SCHOOL INTEGRATION MOBILE, Ala. -- Archbishop Thomas J. Toolen, Bishop of Mobile-Birmingham, has ordered integration of all Catholic elementary and high schools in his diocese beginning in September. Announced in a pastoral letter read in diocesan churches, the order will affect parochial schools in Alabama and 11 counties of West Florida. Alabama has about 25,000 students in 80 Catholic elementary and 13 secondary schools, with about 5,000 Negroes. - Pieta's safe arrival.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30877 PIETA’S SAFE ARRIVAL NEW YORK -- Pieta, the Michelangelo masterpiece depicting the dead Christ lying in the arms of Mary, arrives safely in New York after its long and, thankfully, uneventful trip from Vatican City. Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, who secured the permission of the late Pop John XXIII to bring the statue to the U.S., is shown at right after he had blessed the Pieta aboard a barge in the harbor. Pope Paul VI also approved the cardinal’s request. Bound for the World’s Fair where an estimated 15 million people will view it at the Vatican Pavilion, the masterpiece was insured for $6 million while in transit. Another statue, “The Good Shepherd,” also brought from Vatican City, was insured for $2 million. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-4C-64-W)

- Cardinal's efforts for Israel disclosed.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31005 CARDINAL’S EFFORTS FOR ISRAEL DISCLOSED NEW YORK -- For the first time it was revealed that Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York (left), had a part in the admission of Israel to the United Nations in 1949. The disclosure was made by Charles H. Silver, president of Beth Israel Hospital (right), in introducing the cardinal at the hospital’s 75th anniversary dinner. With them is Mayor Robert F. Wagner. Mr. Silver reported that Cardinal Spellman contacted a number of South American countries in support of Israel’s entry into the U. N. These contacts, Mr. Silver said, were instrumental in the General Assembly approving the new nation’s membership. He added that the prelate’s assistance made “one of the most amazing stories of brotherhood and fellowship among men of good will.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BB-NY-5C-64-NAB)
