- Description
- This was the scene in Westminster's Church House as the Convocations of Canterbury and York held joint sessions at which they voted overwhelmingly to advance negotiations toward a merger of the Anglican and Methodist Churches in England. Sitting at a large table in the center of the hall is Dr. Michael Ramsey, Archbishop of Canterbury. To his left is Dr. Frederick Coggan, Archbishop of York.

- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31634 ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY GREETS RUSSIAN PATRIARCH LONDON -- Dr. Arthur Michael Ramsey (right), Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, warmly welcomes 86-year-old Patriarch Alexei of Moscow, supreme leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, as he arrives at London Airport. The Russian churchman, who earlier visited World Council of Churches headquarters at Geneva, Switzerland, was the first head of the Russian Orthodox Church to visit Great Britain. RAMSEY VISITS GERMAN CHURCH NUREMBURG, Germany -- Sculpture in St. Lorenz church in Nuremburg, Germany, catches the attention of Dr. Arthur Michael Ramsey, Archbishop of Canterbury. The Anglican leader, on a three-day visit with German churchmen, was hailed by Bishop Hanns Lilje of Hanover, chairman of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Germany, as a “bridge-builder between peoples and a pioneer of church unity.” Dr. Ramsey was honored at a reception held by the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany which was attended by representatives of Protestant, Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches.
