- Title
- Vietnamese Catholics flee Reds.
- Description
- Here are some of the thousands of refugees of Northern Vietnam who left their homes after the communists took over the area under the terms of the Geneva Pact. Although the French sent all available shipping to help them, under international law the would-be refugees had to make their own way out. They did this, despite high seas and the frailest of craft, pushing their way to freedom in an evacuation that took several days. These refugees are shown after they were taken aboard the French ship "Jules Verne." Despite the hazardous voyage, one refugee was able to hold on to her belongings which she carried in baskets on her head.

- Fighting priest' in Vietnam relieved of command.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30948 'FIGHTING PRIEST' IN VIETNAM RELIEVED OF COMMAND SAIGON, So. Vietnam -- Father Augustin Nguyen Loc Hoa, a Chinese priest who has headed a corps of volunteers fighting Communist guerrillas in South Vietnam since 1959, has been relieved of his command. A major of the South Vietnamese army has been named to replace him as leader of about 1,200 men who have carved out a safe haven in the Hai Yen sector of the Communist-dominated Camau peninsula of South Vietnam. The 56-year-old priest, shown here working at an outpost of the Binh Hung village, has been a symbol of freedom to Catholics in Vietnam and elsewhere. He is a former Lt. Col. in the Chinese Nationalist Army and fled Communist China in 1951 with several hundred followers. He went first to North Vietnam, then Cambodia and finally to South Vietnam where Chinese and Vietnamese took up arms to help him fight Vietcong guerrillas. No official government explanation for the replacement has so far come from Saigon. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-4D-64-NAB)

- Bishop braves riots in appeal for peace.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31533 BISHOP BRAVES RIOTS IN APPEAL FOR PEACE SAIGON -- Bishop Antoine Nguyen Van Thien of Vinh-Long, South Vietnam, walks through Saigon's streets in a futile attempt to halt fighting between Buddhists and Catholics. A Catholic carrying a weapon halts to kiss the bishop's ring amid the turmoil. The prelate fearlessly strode into strife-torn areas in an appeal for peace. Three had died as a result of the conflict. Buddhist and Catholic authorities later issued an appeal for an end to the fighting which imperiled the country's defense against Communists invading from the North. - Medical nuns at work in Vietnam.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32144 MEDICAL NUNS AT WORK IN VIETNAM QUINHON, So. Vietnam -- The Medical Mission Sisters of Philadelphia continue to operate the only general hospital for civilians in Quinhon, South Vietnam, where Communist guerrillas recently bombed an American Army barracks. One of the nuns, Sister Sheila Marie McGinnis of Troy, N.Y., is shown taking time out from nursing duties at the hospital to go over lessons with a little boy. His arm and side were badly burned by a kerosene lamp. The medical nuns are the only American sisterhood working it Vietnam. Their Holy Family Hospital is staffed by professionally trained nuns, assisted by Vietnamese nurses and aides, who last year treated 25,000 out-patients and several thousands in-patients. The nuns also maintain other medical centers in Asia, Africa and South America. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (FRE-2C-65-NAB)

- Saigon crisis: Buddhist monks in protest.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-29766 SAIGON CRISIS: BUDDHIST MONKS IN PROTEST SAIGON, South Vietnam -- The policies of the Diem government are assailed by Buddhist monks before a huge crowd attending memorial services outside the Xa Loi Pagoda in Saigon. Services were held for a monk who had burned himself to death as a sign of protest against alleged religious persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnam regime headed by President Ngo Dinh Diem. Rioting, police raids on pagoda followed demonstrations in main centers. The U.S. Sate Department charged that the Diem government had violated assurances that it would pressure a policy of reconciliation with the Buddhists.
