- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31484 MISSION HOSPITAL BEGINS REHABILITATION PROGRAM VELLORE, India -- India's first center for the rehabilitation of patients crippled by illness or accidents is a part of the famed Vellore Christian Medical College and Hospital. The specially equipped building (below) was opened for out-patient service in 1963. Eventually it will have 30 beds for long-term, in-patient therapy. Director of the Center is Dr. Mary Verghese, shown with patients, who is confined to a wheelchair as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident. Dr. Verghese, a member of the Syrian Orthodox Church, worked as a resident two years at the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in New York. She recently completed examinations qualifying her as a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. In addition to treating patients, she hopes to teach her specialty to doctors and medical students at Vellore. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (VCM-NY-8E-64-MH)

- A start from nothing.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30708 A START FROM NOTHING WEST BENGAL, India -- Carving new homes out of the forest. This picture, taken in India just across the Pakistani border, shows Christian refugees as they clear ground for make-shift homes. They said they had left Pakistan to escape Muslim persecution. Many thousands have moved into India. The World Council of Churches issued an urgent appeal for aid to the refugees. First reports indicated that 20,000 Catholics, 15,000 Baptists and an undetermined number of other Christians were homeless and in need of clothing, food and drugs. As the giant exodus began there were only two Italian Catholic priests and the two U.S. Baptist missionaries in the immediate area to help them. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30707 HOMELESS WEST BENGAL, India -- Children with no place to go. Hundreds of boys and girls, many separated from their parents, participated in the mass move-out from East Pakistan of thousands of Christians. Muslim persecution was charged as Christian tribes fled to Indian territory. West Bengal authorities said "many thousands" carried only the clothes on their backs in leaving Pakistan. Christian agencies made urgent appeals for help in aiding them. President Mohammad Ayub Khan of Pakistan blamed "Indian propaganda" for agitating tribal Christians with "imaginary stories" of harassment. Indian officials feared upwards of a million people would be involved in the exodus. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (LCD-ND-3B64-W)

- Solution seen for "worst refugee problem."
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30757 SOLUTION SEEN FOR "WORST REFUGEE PROBLEM" CALCUTTA, India -- Many Indian children have never known anything but the squalor surrounding the Sealdah railway station at Calcutta, India, where more than 1,200 families -- nearly 8,000 persons -- have lived since the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan. Their plight has been termed the "worst refugee problem in the world." But through a resettlement program now underway, hope for a better life exists. Church representations and the Indian government have completed long negotiations to establish a site 25 miles north of Calcutta, where refugees totally without employment will build homes and be given material aid. Others will be given assistance in locating within the greater city area. The first several hundred refugee families were moved in March and by early June it is expected all will be resettled. The World Council of Churches has appealed to member Churches for $500,000 to finance the program, which is being handled by the Bengal Refugee Service, an agency of the National Christian Council of India. The Indian government donated land for the resettlement village. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (2-NY-3D-64-NBM)
