- Pope in helicopter waits for take-off.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31402 POPE IN HELICOPTER WAITS FOR TAKE-OFF CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy -- Pope Paul VI sits in a helicopter at Castel Gandolfo awaiting take-off of a 75-mile flight to Orvieto where he participated in ceremonies marking the 700th anniversary of the world-wide Feastday of Corpus Christi. In making the flight, Paul VI became the first Pope to use a helicopter. He also is the first pontiff to travel by airplane -- a precedent he established in January when he visited the Holy Land. In Orvieto, the Pope celebrated Mass and delivered a brief homily in the town's ancient cathedral. He returned to the papal summer villa by automobile. - Pope takes first helicopter flight.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31401 POPE TAKES FIRST HELICOPTER FLIGHT CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy -- With his safety belt secured, a smiling Pope Paul VI waves good-bye from a helicopter before a 75-mile flight from Castel Gandolfo to the medieval city of Orvieto. Landing on a site about two miles from the town, the Pope motored to the ancient Orvieto Cathedral as crowds lining the streets shouted greetings. At the cathedral the Pope celebrated a Mass and delivered a brief homily on man's need for spiritual and material welfare. The service marked the 700th anniversary of the Feastday of Corpus Christi, established throughout the worldwide Church by the Pope Urban IV in a bull dated Sept. 8, 1264. The Pope's helicopter flight was the first ever taken by a pontiff. Last January Paul VI became the first Pope to use an airplane when he visited the Holy Land. Msgr. J. Patrick Carroll-Abbing has founded 40 institutions for homeless boys throughout Italy. Pope Paul expressed his admiration for the Irish priest’s program, which began 19 years ago when he found hundreds of children left homeless and fatherless by the war. “The blessing of God is obviously upon this work,” the pontiff said. “I may visit Boys’ Town soon,” he added, referring to the institution in Rome. Pope Paul also expressed pleasure at the cooperation of the American Committees for Boys’ Towns. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (JA-RO-9B-63-W)
