- Title
- PC(USA) delegation to the Vatican, March 22, 2001.
- Description
- In March 2001, fifteen PC(USA) representatives travelled to the Vatican, on a return visit from the prior December's first-ever formal meeting. The outcome of the meetings was a joint statement in which all parties resolved to find agreement on the doctrine of justification, to recognize each other's baptisms, and to renounce Reformation-era mutual denunciations. Cliff Kirkpatrick, then stated clerk of the PC(USA), echoed the theme of Christian unity that John Paul II put forward in the 1995 encyclical Ut Unum Sint: "It is our deepest hope that the third millennium of Christian history will be the millennium of the reuniting of the broken body of Christ."

Above, Mr. Kennedy listens to the prayer of Richard Cardinal Cushing at the inaugural ceremony in Washington. Below, a carefree, happy moment in Rome where, after his call upon Pope Paul VI, the President visited the Pontifical North American College. Later that day, in a more somber setting, Cardinal Cushing presented to the President gifts that the late Pope John XXIII had put aside for him. - Council briefing for press.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30241 COUNCIL BRIEFING FOR PRESS ROME -- Details and significance of actions taken by the Second Vatican Council are explained to American journalists in Rome. Father Edward L. Heston, an English-language press officer for the Council, attends all meetings of Vatican II and gives oral briefings for 30 minutes daily to newsmen. He also publishes a news bulletin on Council developments for the press and U.S. hierarchy. A native of Ohio and a University of Notre Dame alumnus, Father Heston has been in Rome for 16 years. He is associated with the international headquarters of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. The second session of Vatican II differs drastically from the press assistance provided at the first session. Last year journalists were given given [sic] “cautiously informative bulletins,” says Father Heston, but “this year we tell them everything.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (ND-11D-63-W)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30703 NEW-FOUND MICHELANGELO MASTERPIECE FLORENCE, Italy -- Discovered in a monastery here in 1962, this wooden figure of Christ on the Cross was carved by Michelangelo when the great Renaissance painter and sculptor was only 17. It was known that Michelangelo had carved such a work in his youth, but had been presumed lost or destroyed. It was found in a corner of the monastery, covered by daubs of paint. It was recently put on display at Florence, Italy for the first time. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-3B-64-TFD)
