- Pope in Holy Week rites.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30797 POPE IN HOLY WEEK RITES ROME -- Pope Paul VI is shown in Maundy Thursday and Good Friday ceremonies as he led the world's faithful in commemorating the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ. At top, left, the pontiff carries a large wooden cross up the Palatine Hill in Rome after participating in the Via Crucis, or Way of the Cross. The Pope prayed before each of the 14 Stations of the Cross situated at the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine and the foot of Palatine Hill. At top, right, the Pope prays before one of the Stations in the Good Friday rite. At bottom, left, the pontiff prepares to wash the feet of 13 Latin American seminarians at the traditional Holy Thursday ceremony in the Basilica of St. John Lateran. In right photo the Pope kisses the feet of one of the seminarians. Known as the Mandatum, the foot-washing rite commemorates Christ's action at the institution of the Holy Eucharist when he washed the feet of the Apostles. - Pope outlines first encyclical.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31380 POPE OUTLINES FIRST ENCYCLICAL CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy -- Pope Paul VI is shown as he outlines the scope of his first encyclical in speaking to thousands of pilgrims from various parts of the world at a general audience. The pontiff disclosed that among questions discussed in his encyclical will be peace and the relationship between Christian and economic life. He said it also will deal with the "dialogue of the Church with the world of the non-Christian religions and with the choir of the Christian Churches still separated from the Catholic Church." The encyclical would not contain specific theological or doctrinal points, he said, and will be of an "exhortative" nature. It will be called Ecclesiam Suam (His Church) and be dated Aug. 6, the Feast of the Transfiguration of Christ. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-8A-64-NAB)

Landing on a site about two miles from the town, the Pope motored to the ancient Orvieto Cathedral as crowds lining the streets shouted greetings. At the cathedral the Pope celebrated a Mass and delivered a brief homily on man's need for spiritual and material welfare. The service marked the 700th anniversary of the Feastday of Corpus Christi, established throughout the worldwide Church by the Pope Urban IV in a bull dated Sept. 8, 1264. The Pope's helicopter flight was the first ever taken by a pontiff. Last January Paul VI became the first Pope to use an airplane when he visited the Holy Land. In top photo the Pope prepares to leave the car which drove him about two miles from the helicopter's landing site to the Orevieto Cathedral. Bottom, the auto slowly winds its way to the cathedral where the pontiff celebrated Mass and preached. The services marked the 700th anniversary of the Feast of Corpus Christi, instituted throughout the Church by Pope Urban IV on Sept. 8, 1264. Paul's helicopter flight was the first ever made by a Pope. He returned to Castel Gandolfo by car. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (KEY-8B-64-NAB)

He was the third pontiff to visit the head of state since the signing of the Lateran Treaty of 1929, which upheld the independence of Vatican City and provided an indemnity for the former Papal States. The first to end the Popes’ self-imposed Vatican confinement after the invasion of the papal territory in 1870 was Pius XII, who paid a state visit to the King of Italy in December, 1939. In May, 1963, Pope John XXIII visited President Segni in a private capacity. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-ROME-1-C-64-TFD)

The pontiff had celebrated a Christmas morning Mass at the humble church on the outskirts of the city. Earlier, at a traditional Mass for diplomats in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, the Pope stressed the need for peace. He emphasized this theme at Pietralata and later when addressing the throngs in St. Peter’s Square. On Christmas Day, Pope Paul also visited 300 crippled children. - Text transcribed from caption: C-30241 COUNCIL BRIEFING FOR PRESS ROME -- Details and significance of actions taken by the Second Vatican Council are explained to American journalists in Rome. Father Edward L. Heston, an English-language press officer for the Council, attends all meetings of Vatican II and gives oral briefings for 30 minutes daily to newsmen. He also publishes a news bulletin on Council developments for the press and U.S. hierarchy. A native of Ohio and a University of Notre Dame alumnus, Father Heston has been in Rome for 16 years. He is associated with the international headquarters of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. The second session of Vatican II differs drastically from the press assistance provided at the first session. Last year journalists were given given [sic] “cautiously informative bulletins,” says Father Heston, but “this year we tell them everything.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (ND-11D-63-W)

The pontiff is shown holding blessed palms as he is carried on his portable throne amidst cheering crowds during procession under the basilica's porch.
