Above, Mr. Kennedy listens to the prayer of Richard Cardinal Cushing at the inaugural ceremony in Washington. Below, a carefree, happy moment in Rome where, after his call upon Pope Paul VI, the President visited the Pontifical North American College. Later that day, in a more somber setting, Cardinal Cushing presented to the President gifts that the late Pope John XXIII had put aside for him. The Kennedy family, for more than 40 years, looked upon the cardinal as their parish priest. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-11E-63-W)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32187 FROM RED JAILS TO RED HATS VATICAN CITY -- These two archbishops who suffered imprisonment at the hands of Communists were among 27 prelates named cardinals by Pope Paul VI at a secret consistory. They are Ukrainian Rite Josyf Cardinal Slipyi, Archbishop of Lwow (left), and Josef Cardinal Beran, Archbishop of Prague. The Eastern Rite cardinal was released in 1963 after 18 years of Soviet confinement, and the Czech archbishop recently arrived in Rome after being freed from more than 15 years of imprisonment and house detention. - Police block 'The Deputy' in Rome.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32146 POLICE BLOCK ‘THE DEPUTY’ IN ROME ROME -- A demonstrator is held back by police after fighting broke out outside a deconsecrated church in Rome where a private performance of “The Deputy” was to be held. Police blocked off entrance to the former church’s basement on the grounds that no theater permit had been issued. Fighting erupted when about 100 persons began jeering police. The play was to have been presented by a private theater club, Teatro Scelta, to an invited audience. Fifteen actors and their director staged a sit-in strike in the improvised basement theater to protest the police action. Written by the German author, Rolf Hochhuth, the drama depicts Pope Pius XII as failing to denounce publicly the Nazi persecution of Jews. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-2C-65-NAB)
