- Text transcribed from caption: ORPHAN BECOMES CHINA’S FIRST CARDINAL #1788 Thomas Cardinal Tien, shown here in the robes of his office, is the first Chinese to be elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals, and the first non-Caucasian to receive the honor in the 1,900-year history of the Church. He entered a Catholic mission in China as a nine-year-old orphan and remained to study for the priesthood, eventually becoming Bishop of Tsingtao. - Text transcribed from caption: CHILDREN GREET CHINA’S FIRST CARDINAL #3248 PHILADELPHIA -- Wreathed in smiles, Thomas Cardinal Tien Vicar Apostolic of Tsingtao, first Chinese to be named a Prince of the Church, shakes hands at a Chinatown reception here with two Chinese children representing pupils of Holy Redeemer parochial school. They presented the cardinal with a basket of flowers and with a check for $2,000 for Chinese missions from Dennis Cardinal Dougherty, Archbishop of Philadelphia (seated at right). The children are Bernardine Eng, and Anthony Chunn, both 7 years old. Shown in center is Judge Vincent Carroll, one of several prominent Philadelphians who attended. - Text transcribed from caption: CHINESE CARDINAL RIGHT AT HOME #c-3515 CHICAGO -- Thomas Cardinal Tien of China uses the chopsticks of his native land at a dinner given in his honor here by the On Leong Chinese Merchants Association. He was presented with a purse of $1,000 by Msgr. Joseph B. Lux for “whatever mission work the cardinal desires in China.” It was the gift of the Catholic Church Extension Society.
