- Bishop braves riots in appeal for peace.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31533 BISHOP BRAVES RIOTS IN APPEAL FOR PEACE SAIGON -- Bishop Antoine Nguyen Van Thien of Vinh-Long, South Vietnam, walks through Saigon's streets in a futile attempt to halt fighting between Buddhists and Catholics. A Catholic carrying a weapon halts to kiss the bishop's ring amid the turmoil. The prelate fearlessly strode into strife-torn areas in an appeal for peace. Three had died as a result of the conflict. Buddhist and Catholic authorities later issued an appeal for an end to the fighting which imperiled the country's defense against Communists invading from the North. - Seoul sentences ex-president, churchmen.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45903 SEOUL SENTENCES EX-PRESIDENT, CHURCHMEN SEOUL -- A former South Korean President, a Roman Catholic bishop, two Protestant leaders, and a respected historian were sentenced to prison by a special military court in Seoul for opposing the regime of President Park Chung Hee. The former President, Yun Po-Sun (left), 76, who was accused of having passed funds to students for anti-government demonstrations in April, was given a suspended three-year sentence. The head of the court-martial said the court was “lenient” with Mr. Yun because of his past contribution to the nation as head of state (1960-62). Catholic Bishop Daniel Tji Kak Soun of Won Ju (right), 53, an outspoken critic of the Park regime, was sentenced to 15 years and his “civil rights” were suspended for another 15 years. - Deportation hearing for Maryknoll priest.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45863 DEPORTATION HEARING FOR MARYKNOLL PRIEST MARYKNOLL, N.Y. -- Father Edward M. Gerlock, M.M. (right, top photo) a Maryknoll missionary from Binghampton, N.Y., appears at a deportation hearing in the Philippines with his chief counsel, Lorenzo M. Tanada, a former Senator in the Philippine National Congress. Below, documents are marked during the hearings as spectators look on. At the table, from left to right, are: Mr. Tanada, Father Gerlock, a deportation board clerk and a Philippine National Constabulary officer called as a witness. Maryknoll Bishop Joseph W. Regan, M.M., of Tagum stands at far right. Father Gerlock, arrested by the government at Tagum on the island of Mindanao last October, is still awaiting a ruling by the deportation board although the hearing on his case began in December 1973. Charged with being critical of Filipino martial law, he is free to “come and go” within the city of Manila but is still in a kind of “limbo” so far as his future is concerned. One of three Maryknollers arrested in October 1973 and slated for deportation, the veteran of 12 years’ service in the Philippines decided to plead “not guilty” to charges and demand a hearing. - Visit to India.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45694 VISIT TO INDIA SALEM, India -- Philadelphia’s Cardinal John Krol traveled more than 9,000 miles to officiate at the ordination rites of Bishop Michael B. Duraisamy, the recently named spiritual leader of the Diocese of Salem in the South India State of Tamil Nadu. The Indian prelate came to know the American cardinal when he was a priest-student at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1950s when Cardinal Krol was an auxiliary bishop of the Cleveland diocese. In the left photo, Cardinal Krol participates in the Arati ceremony, which is Hindu in its origins but is used universally by all faiths in India. In the ceremony, an ointment of spices and sandalwood is placed on the forehead of one who comes in the name of God, with the residue then being sprinkled in the path of the visitor. Bishop Duraisamy is at right as two girls bring the ointment to the cardinal. At right, Cardinal Krol, who has removed his shoes, visits a Hindu temple in Salem. He said that there seems to be a friendly coexistence between the Hindu majority and the Christian minority in the area and that the priest’s clerical garb brings signs of instant respect from all segments of the population. Bishop Duraisamy, 43, is a native of the Salem area. His diocese, located in south central India near the border of the State of Kerala, which tradition says was evangelized by St. Thomas the Apostle, has 66,000 Catholics in a general population of 4.5 million. - Melkite archbishop arrested by Israelis.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CJ-45925 MELKITE ARCHBISHOP ARRESTED BY ISRAELIS JERUSALEM -- Archbishop Ilarion Capucci, Patriarchal Vicar of the Greek Catholic (Melkite) Church in Jerusalem, has been arrested by Israeli police and charged with smuggling arms and explosives to Arab Guerrillas in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Police said that the 52-year-old prelate, who was born and raised in Syria, had been acting as an undercover liaison man and gunrunner between Al Fatah guerrilla headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon, and guerrillas operating in the Judea and Samaria regions of the occupied West Bank of Jordan and in the Jerusalem region. According to Chief Superintendent Nahum Bosmi, large quantities of weapons and explosives had been found hidden in the archbishop’s Mercedes sedan earlier in August after he had returned from a visit to Lebanon.
