Above, Mr. Kennedy listens to the prayer of Richard Cardinal Cushing at the inaugural ceremony in Washington. Below, a carefree, happy moment in Rome where, after his call upon Pope Paul VI, the President visited the Pontifical North American College. Later that day, in a more somber setting, Cardinal Cushing presented to the President gifts that the late Pope John XXIII had put aside for him. As the Pope read the pledge to the 26 new Princes of the Church present, each responded, “I promise.” The cardinal received their new scarlet birettas -- three-peaked clerical caps -- but the ritual of conferring the traditional galero, or Red Hat, was eliminated. The galeros, best known insignia of a cardinal, were delivered later to the prelates at their Rome residence. Cardinal Shehan was the only American prelate among the 27 new cardinals named by the Pope. One of them was not present at the public consistory, Angel Cardinal Herrera y Oria, Bishop of Malaga, Spain. He will receive his Red Hat from Generalissimo Franco.
