- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31557 200,000 AT GERMAN CATHOLIC CONGRESS STUTTGART, Germany -- Concelebration of an out-door Latin Rite Mass -- the first in Germany--marked the opening of the 80th German Catholic Day Congress (Katholikentag) in Stuttgart. Top photo shows Jozef Cardinal Frings, Archbishop of Cologne, and 20 priests with whom he concelebrated the Mass. Photo below shows the closing rally in which 200,000 persons gathered in a demonstration of religious unity. The rally featured a Bible-centered "Word of God" service. To emphasize Scripture as a "pillar of fair," a Bible was placed on an elevated platform, flanked by a huge Crucifix. Prayers were said not only for the Church but for all non-Catholic Christians. Another Mass also was concelebrated on the closing day by Archbishop Corrado Bafile, Papal Nuncio to Germany, and 20 other clergy. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (KV-BER-9B-64-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31630 ST. ANDREW RELIC RETURNED TO ORTHODOX VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI sits before altar holding a gold reliquary containing the famed relic of St. Andrew the Apostle during ceremonies in St. Peter's Basilica before its return to the Orthodox Church in Greece. On either side of the pontiff are some of the 2, 300 Fathers of the Vatican Council who participated in the services. Flown to Greece, the relic -- skull of the Apostle -- was escorted by a delegation headed by Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity. On its arrival, the relic and its escorts received a warm welcome from Metropolitan Constantine of Patras, in whose diocesan cathedral the skull will be enshrined. After some 500 years in the St. Peter's grottoes, the relic was returned to the Orthodox by the Pope as a gesture of "brotherly love." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-9E-64-NAB)

- Bishop braves riots in appeal for peace.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31533 BISHOP BRAVES RIOTS IN APPEAL FOR PEACE SAIGON -- Bishop Antoine Nguyen Van Thien of Vinh-Long, South Vietnam, walks through Saigon's streets in a futile attempt to halt fighting between Buddhists and Catholics. A Catholic carrying a weapon halts to kiss the bishop's ring amid the turmoil. The prelate fearlessly strode into strife-torn areas in an appeal for peace. Three had died as a result of the conflict. Buddhist and Catholic authorities later issued an appeal for an end to the fighting which imperiled the country's defense against Communists invading from the North. - Pope Paul VI's first year.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-3111 POPE PAUL VI’S FIRST YEAR (First of a Series of Two Panels) VATICAN CITY -- On June 19,1963, Giovanni Battista Cardinal Montini, Archbishop of Milan, was elected Pope and became the first pontiff in 350 years to take the name of Paul. Top row, left to right, shows the Pope’s coat of arms; the papal tiara being placed on his head by Alfred Cardinal Ottaviani during the coronation rites in St. Peter’s Basilica on June 30; his first visit outside of Vatican City -- the first of many he was to make in following the example of his predecessor, John XXIII; and Paul VI’s historic meeting with President John F. Kennedy (July 2). During that audience he praised Mr. Kennedy for his efforts for world peace and racial equality. On learning of the President’s assassination on Nov. 22, the pontiff broadcast a special message praying for the peace of his “elect soul” and lauding his devotion to “the great causes of humanity.” Bottom row, left to right; first picture shows Pope Paul at a special audience in October with Protestant, Eastern Orthodox and Anglican observers to the Second Vatican Council. Early in his reign he announced his decision to continue the Council inaugurated by John XXIII and stressed that Christian unity was one of his major concerns. Second picture was taken in November as he led some 180 members of the American hierarchy -- including Joseph Cardinal Ritte of St. Louis, Albert Cardinal Meyer of Chicago, James Francis Cardinal McIntyre of Los Angeles, and Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York -- in prayers for the success of the Council. This occurred shortly before Pope Paul formally ratified the epochal Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy which was approved by the Council Fathers at the close of the second session. The third picture was taken in January as the Pope left Rome for his momentous pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He became the first pontiff to ever to travel by air and the first since St. Peter to set foot on soil hallowed by the footsteps of Christ.
