- His goal: return to Korea.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31633 HIS GOAL: RETURN TO KOREA MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Two heart attacks within nine months won't prevent this missionary bishop's return to his See in Korea. Archbishop Harold Henry of Kwangju, a native of Minneapolis, is convalescing in that city pending doctor's permission to take up such Korean tasks as operator of the "largest piggy bank in the world." One of his "aid" programs in Kwangju saw him secure 523 purebred sows, building up a "piggy bank" which last year saw the archdiocese distribute 5,000 piglets to farmers. Archbishop Henry, by sending three nuns to Ireland to study the development of home-spun tweed from lamb's wool, provided a profitable at-home occupation for Korean women. His many "self-help" projects have drawn assistance from the U.S. Food for Peace Program and the German hierarchy -- gifts from the German prelates financed importation of Australian sheep. The 55-year-old prelate said he often borrows ideas developed by the 4-H Club movement in the U.S. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (MS-MINN-9E-64-W)

- Pope Paul VI's first year.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-3111 POPE PAUL VI’S FIRST YEAR (First of a Series of Two Panels) VATICAN CITY -- On June 19,1963, Giovanni Battista Cardinal Montini, Archbishop of Milan, was elected Pope and became the first pontiff in 350 years to take the name of Paul. Top row, left to right, shows the Pope’s coat of arms; the papal tiara being placed on his head by Alfred Cardinal Ottaviani during the coronation rites in St. Peter’s Basilica on June 30; his first visit outside of Vatican City -- the first of many he was to make in following the example of his predecessor, John XXIII; and Paul VI’s historic meeting with President John F. Kennedy (July 2). During that audience he praised Mr. Kennedy for his efforts for world peace and racial equality. On learning of the President’s assassination on Nov. 22, the pontiff broadcast a special message praying for the peace of his “elect soul” and lauding his devotion to “the great causes of humanity.” Bottom row, left to right; first picture shows Pope Paul at a special audience in October with Protestant, Eastern Orthodox and Anglican observers to the Second Vatican Council. Early in his reign he announced his decision to continue the Council inaugurated by John XXIII and stressed that Christian unity was one of his major concerns. Second picture was taken in November as he led some 180 members of the American hierarchy -- including Joseph Cardinal Ritte of St. Louis, Albert Cardinal Meyer of Chicago, James Francis Cardinal McIntyre of Los Angeles, and Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York -- in prayers for the success of the Council. This occurred shortly before Pope Paul formally ratified the epochal Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy which was approved by the Council Fathers at the close of the second session. The third picture was taken in January as the Pope left Rome for his momentous pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He became the first pontiff to ever to travel by air and the first since St. Peter to set foot on soil hallowed by the footsteps of Christ. - The Cushing story
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31209 THE CUSHING STORY: MISSIONS, ECUMENISM (Second of a Series of 2 Photo Layouts) BOSTON -- Foreign missions and ecumenism distinguish the 25-year episcopate of Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston. The “man of many hats” marked the 25th anniversary of his consecration on June 29. At top left, his mission zeal is epitomized by yet another hat, a “lluchu” given to him by Indians in Bolivia. Cardinal Cushing has been honored by two Popes for his foundation and maintenance of the Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle for Latin America. One hundred U.S. priests now serve areas long hit by a shortage of clergy, and the prelate, famed as a fund-raiser, supports their work at a cost of $1 million annually. At upper right, he is shown as he was embraced in 1947 by Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, supreme leader of Eastern Orthodoxy -- the patriarch was then Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in North and South America. Cardinal Cushing’s relations with the Orthodox and Protestants have spurred the ecumenical movement in the U.S.; in recent years he has preached or lectured before many non-Catholic groups. Below, left, he is shown with his old friend, Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, as they participated in an unprecedented Catholic-Protestant Colloquium at Harvard. With them are Dr. Nathan Pusey, Harvard’s president, and Dr. Samuel H. Miller, Dean of Harvard Divinity School and chairman of the Massachusetts Council of Churches’ Committee on Christian Unity. Below, Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, is shown after baptizing Christopher George, son of Attorney General and Mrs. Robert F. Kennedy at Hyannisport [sic], Mass. The President’s warm smile reflects the family’s happiness. Above, Mars 20, 1939, when U.S. Ambassador to England Joseph P. Kennedy, his wife and children were granted an audience by Pope Pius XII. The President-to-be is second from left, back row. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30270 GIFTS TO BE REMEMBERED The Church was very much a part of the life of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Above, the Kennedy brothers are shown as they presented a check for $1,178,000 to the then Archbishop Richard J. Cushing of Boston. The funds, from the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, were used for four archdiocesan projects. The foundation was named for the President’s older brother Joseph, killed in World War II. In this photo, Ted Kennedy is at left, Robert at right. Below, the first Catholic president of the United States receives a gift from Pope Paul VI at Vatican City. The gift was a model of the Pieta, Michelangelo’s masterpiece which will be exhibited at the Vatican Pavilion during the New York World’s Fair. - Text transcribed from caption: C-30397 CARDINAL OUTFITTED FOR POLAR VISIT CHRISTCHURCH, N.Z. -- Bound for the coldest regions of the earth, the Military Vicar to Catholics in the Armed Forces is outfitted by a U.S. Navy supply man. Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, draws his equipment from C.B. Gilbert, storekeeper second class, at Christchurch, N.Z., before undertaking his flights to Navy and scientific stations near the South Pole. On his annual visit to servicemen, Cardinal Spellman crossed the international date line, thus was able to celebrate Masses on two Christmases. He visited personnel at McMurdo, Byrd and South Pole stations involved in Operation Deepfreeze. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-12D-63-W)

During the three-hour party, the cardinal greeted 2,000 guests and 175 children. Each guest paid a $25 admission, which pays for the care of one foundling for five days. A highlight of the party was the appearance of Santa Claus, who distributed gifts to the great delight of the young ones.
