The memorial to the famed Jewish martyr will care for children from all parts of the world. When an art exhibition was arranged in Rome to raise funds for the living memorial to the Jewish girl, the Vatican was asked if it wished to submit a painting or sculpture. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30762 EXPELLED NUNS CONTINUE ARRIVAL IN ROME ROME -- Nun missionaries expelled from Sudan's southern provinces form a stream of white habits as they arrive at Rome's Fiumicino airport. They were part of about 200 Catholic missionaries -- most of them Italian -- reaching Rome from the predominately Muslim nation. In all about 300 Catholics and Protestant missionaries are being forced out of Sudan after being charged with anti-state activities. The accusation has been vehemently denied by the missionaries. Some of the Catholic priests and nuns have been received by Pope Paul VI after coming to Rome. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-3D-64-NAB)

The rites were held in connection with a memorial Mass for 130 Catholic missionaries killed in the Congo since that country’s independence in 1960. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32146 POLICE BLOCK ‘THE DEPUTY’ IN ROME ROME -- A demonstrator is held back by police after fighting broke out outside a deconsecrated church in Rome where a private performance of “The Deputy” was to be held. Police blocked off entrance to the former church’s basement on the grounds that no theater permit had been issued. Fighting erupted when about 100 persons began jeering police. The play was to have been presented by a private theater club, Teatro Scelta, to an invited audience. Fifteen actors and their director staged a sit-in strike in the improvised basement theater to protest the police action. Written by the German author, Rolf Hochhuth, the drama depicts Pope Pius XII as failing to denounce publicly the Nazi persecution of Jews. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-2C-65-NAB)

- Pope rededicates Monte Cassino.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31750 POPE REDEDICATES MONTE CASSINO CASSINO, Italy -- Pope Paul VI rededicates to peace and European unity the sixth century Benedictine Abbey of Monte Cassino, destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II and later reconstructed on its same hilltop location. Founded by St. Benedict in 529, the abbey has been rebuilt a number of times in is long history. At the dedication Mass, the Pope named St. Benedict as patron of Europe and cited him as “a messenger of peace, a maker of union, a teacher of civilization and, above all, a herald of Christ’s religion and founder of monastic life in the West.” In a reference to the bombing of the abbey (Germans had been reported using it as an observation post), the Pope said, “we cannot fail to deplore that civilized men should have had the boldness to make of St. Benedict’s tomb a target of merciless violence.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (K-10E-64-NAB)

- Pope returns home from India.
- Description
- C-31896 POPE RETURNS HOME FROM INDIA ROME -- A smiling but tired Pope Paul VI acknowledges the warm welcome given to him by a cheering crowd on his arrival at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport from his momentous visit to Bombay, India. Thousands of people holding lighted torches and the ringing of church bells accompanied the Pope during his evening ride to Vatican City. Behind him were a four-day visit to Bombay and an 8,000-mile flight. While in the Indian city -- for the 38th International Eucharist Congress -- the Pope met with many government officials and leaders of non-Catholic religions. At these meetings and in his talks, the Pope’s themes were religious unity, peace and aid to the world’s poor. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (K-12B-64-NAB)
