- Pope visits Vatican Library.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31151 POPE VISITS VATICAN LIBRARY VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI inspects an ancient coin during his visit to the Vatican Library. Among those accompanying the pontiff are Eugene Cardinal Tisserant, dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals and protector of the library. In a brief talk the Pope stressed that the Church is “neither indifferent nor extraneous to anything related to culture. On the contrary, its eyes are open and attentive to every human phenomenon.” The pontiff also cited the “patient and untiring” work which over the centuries had created one of the world’s greatest libraries. - New cardinal pledges obedience.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32203 NEW CARDINAL PLEDGES OBEDIENCE VATICAN CITY -- Lawrence Cardinal Shehan, Archbishop of Baltimore, listens as Pope Paul VI reads the pledge of “loyalty, submission, obedience and perpetual collaboration” taken by the new cardinals at a public consistory. As the Pope read the pledge to the 26 new Princes of the Church present, each responded, “I promise.” The cardinal received their new scarlet birettas -- three-peaked clerical caps -- but the ritual of conferring the traditional galero, or Red Hat, was eliminated. The galeros, best known insignia of a cardinal, were delivered later to the prelates at their Rome residence. Cardinal Shehan was the only American prelate among the 27 new cardinals named by the Pope. One of them was not present at the public consistory, Angel Cardinal Herrera y Oria, Bishop of Malaga, Spain. He will receive his Red Hat from Generalissimo Franco. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32155 POPE WELCOMES ORTHODOX DELEGATES VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI chats with Metropolitan Meliton of Heliopolis, one of two representatives of Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras of Istanbul received by the pontiff in a private talk. The other Eastern Orthodox leader was Metropolitan Chrysostom of Hydra, secretary of the Third Pan-Orthodox Conference held at Rhodes, Greece, last November. Metropolitan Meliton presided over the conference. Greeting the two Orthodox delegates as “dear brothers in Christ,” the Pope said their meeting was a “profoundly happy event.” The Rhodes conference authorized individual Orthodox Churches to continue exploration with the Catholic Church on means for establishing closer relations. It voted, however, to postpone any collective approach to Rome for unity talks until the end of the Vatican Council. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-2C-65-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31833 CARDINAL GETS WARM PAPAL GREETING VATICAN CITY -- Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, is affectionally greeted by Pope Paul VI at a private audience for American bishops. At the Ecumenical Council’s 124th general congregation, Cardinal Spellman made a strong plea for an endorsement of state aid to parochial schools. In debate on propositions dealing with Catholic schools and universities, the cardinal said the religious orientation of schools should not exclude them from a “rightful measure of public support.” While parents should be free to choose what schools they wish for their children, he said, they “should not in consequence of their choice be subject to unjust economic burdens.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-11C-64-NAB)

- Pope proposes Roman Curia reforms.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29915 POPE PROPOSES ROMAN CURIA REFORMS VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI gestures as he receives prelates and officials of the Roman Curia. In addressing them he proposed that the Church’s central administrative body be modernized for today’s age. Major reforms asked by the Pope included greater authority to diocesan bishops, who now must refer many matters to Rome; collaboration of bishops with the Pope in the “study and responsibility” of Church government; internationalization of Curia members, now predominantly Italian; and education of Curia personnel along more “ecumenical” lines. Coming a week before the opening of the Second Vatican Council’s second session, the Pope’s address to the Curia gave added significance to the first item on the Council’s agenda. This was entitled “Of the Church” and dealt mainly with relations between bishops and the Church in modern times. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-9D-63-NAB)
