ANDREW RELIC RETURNED TO ORTHODOX VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI sits before altar holding a gold reliquary containing the famed relic of St. Andrew the Apostle during ceremonies in St. Peter's Basilica before its return to the Orthodox Church in Greece. On either side of the pontiff are some of the 2, 300 Fathers of the Vatican Council who participated in the services. Flown to Greece, the relic -- skull of the Apostle -- was escorted by a delegation headed by Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity. On its arrival, the relic and its escorts received a warm welcome from Metropolitan Constantine of Patras, in whose diocesan cathedral the skull will be enshrined. After some 500 years in the St. Peter's grottoes, the relic was returned to the Orthodox by the Pope as a gesture of "brotherly love." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-9E-64-NAB)

VATICAN CITY -- Concelebrants of the Latin Rite Mass in St. Peter's Basilica opening the Vatican Council's third session partake of the consecrated wine with a spoon from the chalice, as Pope Paul VI stands by praying. The pontiff alone drank the wine directly from the chalice. In addition to the Pope, 24 prelates concelebrated the Mass. These included three cardinals, 15 archbishops -- two of whom were Africans; four bishops and two heads of religious orders. The service marked the first time on record that a Latin Rite Mass was ever concelebrated in the huge basilica. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (KEY-9C-64-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31380 POPE OUTLINES FIRST ENCYCLICAL CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy -- Pope Paul VI is shown as he outlines the scope of his first encyclical in speaking to thousands of pilgrims from various parts of the world at a general audience. The pontiff disclosed that among questions discussed in his encyclical will be peace and the relationship between Christian and economic life. He said it also will deal with the "dialogue of the Church with the world of the non-Christian religions and with the choir of the Christian Churches still separated from the Catholic Church." The encyclical would not contain specific theological or doctrinal points, he said, and will be of an "exhortative" nature. It will be called Ecclesiam Suam (His Church) and be dated Aug. 6, the Feast of the Transfiguration of Christ. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-8A-64-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31401 POPE TAKES FIRST HELICOPTER FLIGHT CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy -- With his safety belt secured, a smiling Pope Paul VI waves good-bye from a helicopter before a 75-mile flight from Castel Gandolfo to the medieval city of Orvieto. Landing on a site about two miles from the town, the Pope motored to the ancient Orvieto Cathedral as crowds lining the streets shouted greetings. At the cathedral the Pope celebrated a Mass and delivered a brief homily on man's need for spiritual and material welfare. The service marked the 700th anniversary of the Feastday of Corpus Christi, established throughout the worldwide Church by the Pope Urban IV in a bull dated Sept. 8, 1264. The Pope's helicopter flight was the first ever taken by a pontiff. Last January Paul VI became the first Pope to use an airplane when he visited the Holy Land.
