- Clergyman arrested in anti-segregation fight.
- Description
- Protestant, Catholic and Jewish clergymen have been among some 300 persons arrested in a series of efforts to integrate the privately owned Gwynn Oak Amusement Park. In one of the anti-segregation demonstrations outside the park, a minister donned a red, white and blue "Uncle Sam" outfit to symbolize the fight for racial equality. He was promptly arrested on trespassing charges. The clergyman, the Rev. David Andrews, assistant chaplain at Morgan State College, is shown here being taken into custody by police.

- UPCUSA Civil Rights demonstration.
- Description
- New York--A peaceful pre-Independence Day demonstration for racial equality was held by some 500 clergymen and members of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. The placard-carrying demonstrators marched for 45 minutes in a City Hall Plaza area, then heard addresses by Mayor Robert F. Wagner, center, and Dr. W. Eugene Houston, left, a Harlem pastor who heads the presbytery's new commission on religion and race. The Mayor called for enactment of President Kennedy's civil rights proposals and pledged continuing efforts toward greater racial equality in New York City. Dr. Houston warned against the city "dragging its feet"on integration and called for acceleration of school desegregation.

- In memoriam: red vestments for martyrs.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-299923 IN MEMORIAM: RED VESTMENTS FOR MARTYRS SAN FRANCISCO -- Typical of hundreds of churches across the United States was this scene in San Francisco. On Sunday, Sept. 22, the nation's churchgoers joined in memorial services for four Negro girls who died when a bomb blasted a Negro Baptist church in Birmingham. here, at St. Dominic's Roman Catholic church, the more than 2,500 attending services overflowed the building. They fell to their knees on the sidewalk during a Mass offered for the dead children. The priest wore vestments in the "red of martyrdom" instead of the black of mourning. - Pope Paul VI's first year.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-3111 POPE PAUL VI’S FIRST YEAR (First of a Series of Two Panels) VATICAN CITY -- On June 19,1963, Giovanni Battista Cardinal Montini, Archbishop of Milan, was elected Pope and became the first pontiff in 350 years to take the name of Paul. Top row, left to right, shows the Pope’s coat of arms; the papal tiara being placed on his head by Alfred Cardinal Ottaviani during the coronation rites in St. Peter’s Basilica on June 30; his first visit outside of Vatican City -- the first of many he was to make in following the example of his predecessor, John XXIII; and Paul VI’s historic meeting with President John F. Kennedy (July 2). During that audience he praised Mr. Kennedy for his efforts for world peace and racial equality. On learning of the President’s assassination on Nov. 22, the pontiff broadcast a special message praying for the peace of his “elect soul” and lauding his devotion to “the great causes of humanity.” Bottom row, left to right; first picture shows Pope Paul at a special audience in October with Protestant, Eastern Orthodox and Anglican observers to the Second Vatican Council. Early in his reign he announced his decision to continue the Council inaugurated by John XXIII and stressed that Christian unity was one of his major concerns. Second picture was taken in November as he led some 180 members of the American hierarchy -- including Joseph Cardinal Ritte of St. Louis, Albert Cardinal Meyer of Chicago, James Francis Cardinal McIntyre of Los Angeles, and Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York -- in prayers for the success of the Council. This occurred shortly before Pope Paul formally ratified the epochal Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy which was approved by the Council Fathers at the close of the second session. The third picture was taken in January as the Pope left Rome for his momentous pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He became the first pontiff to ever to travel by air and the first since St. Peter to set foot on soil hallowed by the footsteps of Christ. - A picture of courage.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30378 A PICTURE OF COURAGE BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Like many other high school seniors, Betsey and Barbara Lombardi of Shelton, Conn., will be confronting college board exams this winter. But, there is a difference. They will be taking them in Braille. Born prematurely and blinded by too much oxygen in the incubator, the twins are now seniors at Notre Dame High School in Bridgeport, Conn. Previously, they has [sic] been students at the Oak Hill School for the Blind in Hartford from kindergarten through the 11th grade. Betsey wants to study mathematics or French in college, while Barbara is a prospective English major. Beside being avid readers, the twins have become licensed ham radio operators, have scored highly in typing competition, and have played the piano since second grade. Their principal, Sister Teresa St. James, says: “They have certainly taught us to see what persistence and courage are.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BD-BR-12C-63-RB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30289 CATHOLIC STUDENTS HEAR BILLY GRAHAM BELMONT, N.C. -- Evangelist Billy Graham is obviously having an enjoyable time as he is interviewed by students of Belmont Abbey College, a Roman Catholic institution at Belmont, N.C. With him is the Very Rev. John Oetgen, O.S.B., president. The Southern Baptist clergyman addressed 1,200 students who gave him a standing ovation. It was his first address at a Catholic institution. Father Oetgen said Belmont Abbey had been praised for inviting the evangelist -- “but after hearing Dr. Graham, I think instead of praise we should have been blamed for having waited so long.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (FRE-NC-11E-63-W)
