- Text transcribed from caption: C-31998 CONGO SURVIVORS GREETED BY POPE VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI had a special greeting at a general audience for a group of nuns who escaped the massacre of missionaries at Wamba in the Congo. The Italian nuns are members of the Missionary Sisters of Verona. Other missionaries, including priest and Sisters, were in the general audience of some 1,000 persons in the Vatican’s Hall of Benedictions. - Belgian bishop slain in the Congo.

- Text transcribed from caption: C-31989 BELGIAN BISHOP SLAIN IN THE CONGO LEOPOLDVILLE, the Congo -- Bishop Joseph-Pierre Albert Wittebols of Wamba, in the northeastern part of the Congo, was reported massacred by Congolese rebels who seized the Belgian-born prelate and other missionaries in the Wamba area as hostages. A number of missionaries of the Priests of the Sacred Heart, of which the bishop was a member, and nuns were believed missing from Wamba. Bishop Wittebols was born in Etterbeck, in 1912, and was ordained in 1937. He was named Titular Bishop of Callipoli and Vicar Apostolic of Wamba when that vicariate was formed in 1949.
