- 100,000 jam Soldiers Field to honor saint.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: #C-4563 100,000 JAM SOLDIERS FIELD TO HONOR SAINT CHICAGO -- A huge throng of 100,000 participants stand solemnly to view a giant processional, that included 1,000 priests led by Samuel Cardinal Stritch, Archbishop of Chicago, wind its way around brightly-lit Soldiers Field, during a colorful religious drama held here to celebrate the recent canonization of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. The pageant, sponsored by the Holy Name Union of the archdiocese of Chicago, also featured a living portrayal of the map of the United States with several girls dressed as Mother Cabrini and nuns of her order moving from place to place, dramatizing the way she traveled extensively in pursuit of her labors. Another group of 2,000 girls portrayed a living rosary. Cardinal Stritch, speaking from an altar dominated by a 75-foot painting of Mother Cabrini, lauded the virtues of the Italian-born nun who became the first American saint.
