- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31822 REMAINS OF ST. FRANCIS TO BE VENERATED GOA, India -- This silver casket encrusted with precious stones holds the body of St. Francis Xavier, Apostle of the East, to be publicly venerated Nov. 26-Jan. 6 in the Cathedral of Old Goa, India. Public exposition of the body is held in connection with the saint’s feastday, Dec. 3 -- anniversary of his death in China in 1552. The remains will be carried in a procession from their permanent resting place in the Bom Jesus church to the cathedral, a quarter of a mile away. Thousands of pilgrims in Bombay for the International Eucharistic Congress (Nov. 28-Dec. 6) are expected to visit Goa during the exposition. Born in Spain, the saint was a co-founder of the Jesuit Order. He began his missions to the Orient in 1541, preaching first in Goa, and later going to Japan -- making many converts wherever he went. He was canonized March 22, 1622. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CSDA-BOM-11C-64-NAB)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31768 EXTREMISTS’ SIGNS OPPOSE POPE’S VISIT, MISSIONARIES NEW DELHI -- Posters in New Delhi oppose the projected visit of Pope Paul VI to Bombay and call on Christian missionaries to “quit India.” The sign at left, inspected by an Indian student, states: “Mister Pope, Go Back Home!” The other warns Indians to “beware of their anti-national activities” in calling on missionaries to leave the country. India, a predominantly non-Christian nation, has hailed the Pope’s planned visit to the Eucharist Congress in Bombay. However, some extremists have used the visit as a means of reviving anti-missionary propaganda. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-NY-10E-64-W)

- Visit to India.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45694 VISIT TO INDIA SALEM, India -- Philadelphia’s Cardinal John Krol traveled more than 9,000 miles to officiate at the ordination rites of Bishop Michael B. Duraisamy, the recently named spiritual leader of the Diocese of Salem in the South India State of Tamil Nadu. The Indian prelate came to know the American cardinal when he was a priest-student at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1950s when Cardinal Krol was an auxiliary bishop of the Cleveland diocese. In the left photo, Cardinal Krol participates in the Arati ceremony, which is Hindu in its origins but is used universally by all faiths in India. In the ceremony, an ointment of spices and sandalwood is placed on the forehead of one who comes in the name of God, with the residue then being sprinkled in the path of the visitor. Bishop Duraisamy is at right as two girls bring the ointment to the cardinal. At right, Cardinal Krol, who has removed his shoes, visits a Hindu temple in Salem. He said that there seems to be a friendly coexistence between the Hindu majority and the Christian minority in the area and that the priest’s clerical garb brings signs of instant respect from all segments of the population. Bishop Duraisamy, 43, is a native of the Salem area. His diocese, located in south central India near the border of the State of Kerala, which tradition says was evangelized by St. Thomas the Apostle, has 66,000 Catholics in a general population of 4.5 million.
