PONTIFF ORDAINS EIGHT NEW AFRICAN BISHOPS
KINSHASA, Zaire--Pope John Paul II embraces one of eight new
African bishops he ordained on May 4, during an open air ceremony at Kinshasa, Zaire.
The bishops were from Zaire, Burundi, the Sudan, and
one from French Canada -- who will serve in Djibouti.
The pontiff, who had earlier been cheered by the huge crowd when
he issued greetings in four local languages, also drew long applause when
he told the new bishops that they were contributing to the formation of
"honest citizens, enemies of corruption and injustice." He spoke in both French
and English during the homily, as he declared their elevation was a sign of the "maturity and autonomy"
of their churches and called their mission both "spiritual and moral."
