    My
  • speaker
    name is Reverend George Teaz
  • speaker
    Jamieson. I was born in
  • speaker
Philadelphia on February the twenty six nineteen hundred and
  • speaker
seven. Was educated in the Philadelphia public
  • speaker
schools and after graduation from high
  • speaker
school, having no intention of going to
  • speaker
college, I secured a job in the actuary Department of the Penn Mutual Life
  • speaker
    Insurance
  • speaker
company. And, after a few years there.
  • speaker
I went to a Charka Corporation of
  • speaker
    Philadelphia, which are steamship terminal
  • speaker
operators and was a cost accountant
  • speaker
there. I decided to turn my
  • speaker
life over to the ministry of Jesus
  • speaker
Christ and in nineteen thirty- two enrolled at Temple
  • speaker
    University in
  • speaker
    this school of theology
  • speaker
there. And, almost immediately ever hired by the Union
  • speaker
    Tabernacle Presbyterian Church
  • speaker
as a lay assistant to the
  • speaker
minister on a full time basis.
  • speaker
    After graduating with a bachelor
  • speaker
science and theology and S.T.B. I
  • speaker
    mean and
  • speaker
    a Bachelor of
  • speaker
Education. At the same time, having earned a master in theology and a
  • speaker
    doctorate in theolgy,
  • speaker
I was called to the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield
  • speaker
at Flourtown, Pennsylvania in the old Philadelphia Presbytery North.
  • speaker
I was ordained on October the fifth nineteen thirty
  • speaker
seven. From thirty-seven to forty three having
  • speaker
    served at Flowertown,
  • speaker
I was decided to volunteer for the United States Army
  • speaker
chaplaincy. And, I was called in forty three and served till forty six
  • speaker
    as a transport
  • speaker
chaplain and post chaplain at Fort Lawton in
  • speaker
    Washington. After retirement from the
  • speaker
Army to nineteen. [Hinn] There was a special name for
  • speaker
    that sort of occupation. Weren't
  • speaker
you on the Navy ships and you were called
  • speaker
What? A saildier. [Jamieson] We called ourselves saildiers because we sailed with the
  • speaker
Navy all the time, and our post office
  • speaker
address was a United States Fleet Post Office, but I was in the army
  • speaker
    nevertheless. After retiring from the
  • speaker
Army, I was called to the Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church in Marshallton, Delaware, and
  • speaker
    down that
  • speaker
    in Newcastle County,
  • speaker
where I served until nineteen sixty-two.
  • speaker
During that time I had served the church as Moderator of presbytery. Moderator of the synod,
  • speaker
in all the base committees of the presbytery and synod.
  • speaker
Nine hundred sixty two, I resigned there. and [Hinn]
  • speaker
Well before you go on from there. What kind of people were in that church? Were
  • speaker
    they farmers
  • speaker
or businessmen or what? [Jamieson] They were wealthy
  • speaker
farmers and scientists of the Dupont Company.
  • speaker
Almost fifty fifty doctors and farmers.
  • speaker
[Hinn] Which. What would you say was one of your
  • speaker
must. Interesting experiences in that church?
  • speaker
[Jamieson] I don't think there is any more than any
  • speaker
pastorate, execpt I was able as in Flowertown to build an educational building
  • speaker
    and to
  • speaker
redecorate model which was church sanctuary church itself.
  • speaker
[Hinn] What kind of programs did you put on at that time in that
  • speaker
church? [Jamieson] You know the same as every other
  • speaker
    minister worship
  • speaker
services youth programs men's work women's
  • speaker
work the same as in any ordinary Prebyterian
  • speaker
    Church. Nothing
  • speaker
    unusual. After I retired
  • speaker
    from there, I went to
  • speaker
Rosemont Presbyterian village under Philadelphia Presbyterian Homes to serve as the superintendent
  • speaker
there, where I continued till I retired.
  • speaker
[Himm] What age group of people was that at Rosemont Village? [Jamieson] Well, it is a
  • speaker
    retirement village. It
  • speaker
went from sixty five to ninety
  • speaker
five. [Hinn] And how many were in the
  • speaker
group? [Jamieson] about eighty five. [Hinn] Did you have
  • speaker
any thing especially interesting happen there?
  • speaker
[Jamieson] Not especially [Hinn] did you.
  • speaker
I know that you put on some programs that were especially
  • speaker
interesting like once a year having
  • speaker
a tea and inviting people out,
  • speaker
    or wasn't it a tea?
  • speaker
[Jamieson] I don't know what you mean. We had continuous programs all year round
  • speaker
    but picnics
  • speaker
parties and social functions in which the volunteers of the Ladies Auxilliary
  • speaker
    were always invited to
  • speaker
and all the residents and workers and so
  • speaker
on we were continuously in motion.
  • speaker
    I. Did you have
  • speaker
    the musical
  • speaker
programs? What kind of programs did you
  • speaker
have? [Jamieson] We had entertainment of all kinds. Choral
  • speaker
    groups, solo groups, instrumental
  • speaker
    groups. We had weekly Bible
  • speaker
    study, weekly religious
  • speaker
    service Holy Communion
  • speaker
every two months. It was a
  • speaker
continuous program every night of the
  • speaker
    week. Card parties, birthday parties,
  • speaker
    and all the rest of
  • speaker
it. [Hinn] But, there was one special event each
  • speaker
year in which you invited people in from the
  • speaker
outside, wasn't there? Maybe donors or
  • speaker
I something like that? [Jamieson] Well, not so often. They were invited to
  • speaker
all the Fourth of July picnic and the Halloween party.
  • speaker
[Hinn] There wasn't any special event that they were invited
  • speaker
to? [Jameison] No. The Women's Auxiliary put on their greatest fashion show
  • speaker
for all the Homes once a year. [Himm] Maybe that's what are. [Jamieson] There were all the
  • speaker
hundreds and hundreds came and they raised thousands of
  • speaker
dollars for the homes. And, they still do that every year. [Hinn] Sounds
  • speaker
great! [Jamieson] They do it at some big hotel
  • speaker
    or eating
  • speaker
place. [Hinn] What did you do when
  • speaker
you left there? [Jamieson] I retired, that's it. [Hinn] But you're still working I
  • speaker
know. [Jamieson] But, that's just past
  • speaker
times. I don't work in ministry except on
  • speaker
the men's work Committee of the
  • speaker
presbytery. [Hinn] How many years were you in each
  • speaker
    church? [Jamieson] Well,
  • speaker
I was assistant at Union Tabernacle for five
  • speaker
    years. I was in Flower
  • speaker
town six years. I was in the
  • speaker
    Army for over three
  • speaker
years. And, I was in Marshallton for fifteen
  • speaker
years, and at Rosemont for ten years. Approximately.
  • speaker
[Hinn] Well, that sounds very good. You can't
  • speaker
think of any special experience you had in one of these places that you'd like to tell us
  • speaker
    about some interesting happening here
  • speaker
or something. Nothing except once in
  • speaker
awhile in Delaware. I happen to be a minister
  • speaker
of what is called the governor's
  • speaker
church because in the state of Delaware
  • speaker
most political leaders and governors had come from that church in seventeen
  • speaker
twenty and we had a governor's night. One time where we
  • speaker
had three governors present for about.
  • speaker
    With several hundred
  • speaker
men but that was only because it was pretty over church.
  • speaker
    Sounds very
  • speaker
good. And, is there anything else you can think of that interesting that
  • speaker
happened in any one of your churches?
  • speaker
[Jamieson] No I've nothing is exciting except every
  • speaker
day. [Hinn] That's is a good attitude to have.
  • speaker
    Thank you very much. We
  • speaker
appreciate your telling us about your work
  • speaker
    and what happened. And the
  • speaker
Historical Society will be glad to have this information. It will
  • speaker
    be filed under
  • speaker
    their special program
  • speaker
    for oral
  • speaker
history and we do thank you very much.
  • speaker
I will hear playback and see what you think of
  • speaker
    it.
