Title:
Student addresses the General Assembly of the National Council of Churches in Detroit.
Description:
Attempts to give draft card to NCC: James D. Rubins, 21, a student at Hope College, Holland, Mich., addresses the General Assembly of the National Council of Churches in Detroit. He sought to present his Selective Service card to the delegates, to be held "in trust." Mr. Rubins, a member of the Reformed Church in America, asked the NCC to put "action behind a policy position backing religious obedience and civil disobedience." Assembly delegates voted down Mr. Rubins attempt to surrender his draft card.

Description:
Presbyterian Churchman Receives Medal for Merit -- Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson presents the Medal for Merit to the Reverend William Barrow Pugh, D.D., of Philadelphia, Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., for his services to the United States during the war. As chairman of the General Commission on Army and Navy Chaplains, Dr. Pugh was instrumental in bringing two thousand clergymen into the chaplaincy. The ceremony took place in Mr. Patterson's office, Pentagon, Washington D.C., July 8, 1947.
