Description:
Portland, Ore. -- Dr. Eugene Smathers, 60, pastor of a Presbyterian church in
Big Lick, Tennessee, which has never had more than 75 members, scored a
surprise upset when he was elected moderator of the 3.3 million-member United
Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. Dr. Smathers defeated Dr. William H. Hudnut
Jr., of New York, who recently led the denomination's Fifty Million Fund to a
successful conclusion. The new moderator suceeds Dr. Ganse Little, minister
of the Pasadena, California Presbyterian church. Dr. Smathers said he hopes
to "extend the strength and mission of the Church to the poor of the poor of
the world."

Description:
Columbia, Mo. -- These Columbia high school students are typical of the
thousands of teen-agers and elementary school youngsters who took part in
trick or treat fun for the United Nations International Children's Emergency
Fund (UNICEF) on Halloween night. Largely church-sponsored, the project is an
annual affair conducted to help the hungry and sick children abroad with
hospital care and food. The movement started in 1950 by the Rev. Clyde
Allison, pastor of the Bridesburg Presbyterian church in Philadelphia. Today,
the interfaith project benefits millions of youngsters in all parts of the
world.
