Description:
Jewish and Catholic -- all equally freedom bound. Bremerhaven, Germany ... equally happy over their journey to freedom are Jewish, Protestant, Roman Catholic and Orthodox Catholic displaced persons from Eastern Europe being brought to the United States. Some of the many who made up the cargo of the U.S. Army transport General William M. Black -- the first DP ship U.S. bound -- are pictured having one of their last meals in Europe before boarding the transport. Gathered around the table at left are Orthodox Jews, whose dietetic laws are strictly observed at the DP deport -- a "kosher" sign marks their table. At right a Catholic nun, who refused to give her name, shyly laughs and eats. She is very happy to be leaving Germany for the freedom of the United States.
