Description:
Archeologist Lawrence Stager (left) of the Oriental Institute of the
University of Chicago, pauses a moment with one of his graduate student
co-workers on their most recent excavation this past summer of the burial
ground of the ancient city of Carthage in what is now Tunisia. The urn near
Stager's hand is typical of the burial urns that contain the incinerated
remains of the children sacrificed to the gods by the Carthaginians.
