The card they made for the late President's daughter was four feet high. Too large for the mail, a photo of the card and letters from each of the students were sent to Caroline. Sister Rosaline, teacher of the class, said the youngsters wanted to express their feelings at Christmas but decided to wait and construct the giant Valentine. Text transcribed from caption: PC-30292 ANOTHER SHOCK FOR AMERICANS DALLAS, Texas -- The second chapter in the tragedy of a nation. This dramatic photograph shows Jack Ruby, a Dallas nightclub operator at right, as he thrust a gun forward to shoot Lee Harvey Oswald, accused slayer of President Kennedy. The killing of Oswald was condemned by most responsible Americans as, in the words of a newspaper editorial, “a blot on justice.” But often -- too often, commentators said -- such comments as these were heard: “he (Oswald) had it coming” and “it will save the expense of sending him to the electric chair.” A reporter said that among the Dallas crowd outside the police headquarters “there were great cheers…loud ‘yippees’…real Texas shouts.” Around the country reports were heard of citizens suggesting that Ruby, Oswald’s slayer, “should get the Congressional Medal of Honor.” This response was condemned by the press, the clergy, the nation’s leaders. They cried out in appeals for an end to hatred, prejudice, inflammatory statements. It was pointed out that John F. Kennedy had said: “Our nation is founded on the principle that observance of the law is the eternal safeguard of liberty and defiance of the law is the surest road to tyranny.” Said one newspaper: “Thos who applaud the killer on the ground that he gave the suspected assassin his due must share in the disgrace. They do no honor to our late President or to the institutions which President Kennedy ought to uphold.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-11E-63-W)

Text transcribed from caption: PC-30267 KEY MOMENTS HAD PROTESTANT SETTINGS Key moments in the political life of the late President Kennedy came amid Protestant settings. Above, the man destined to become the nation’s first Roman Catholic chief executive speaks in October, 1960, before the Ministers Association of Greater Houston. Addressing 500 clergymen he delineated his thoughts on separation of Church and State. Below, the photo shows what must have been a heart-warming moment for the young leader. It was provided by Dr. E. S. James of Dallas, left, clergyman-editor of the Texas Baptist Standard. Dr. James had opposed election of a Roman Catholic president in 1960. He came to the White House in February, 1963, however, to tell Mr. Kennedy that “it was a pleasure” to note that religious bias had been scrupulously avoided by the administration. The Baptist leader said the Catholic chief executive was “determined to abide by the Constitutional provision for the separation of Church and State.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (SD-11E-63-W)
